The series honors Richard Gilder of New York and his family, as well as his friends, Dan and Lou Jordan of Virginia. The 2013 Gilder-Jordan Lecturer in Southern History is Dr. Walter Johnson of Harvard.

    • Historic Gardens at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum

      The Museum’s six period gardens have been recreated to show the transition of gardens from early 16th through to late 19th century. They show the herbs, vegetables and flowers that would have met the needs of rural households over the centuries. Each garden represents the period of its house as well as the social status of the householder. This short documentary features interviews with former Head Gardener Bob Holman, and the work of current Head Gardener Carlotta Holt and her Museum gardening team.

The film also considers how textiles worked within early modern domestic interiors – what their visual impact was and how their original viewers might have responded to them.

          The legacy of the Davis Bend experiment can be witnessed by the way the residents of Mound Bayou continued to answer the call to leadership. The Knights and Daughters of Tabor identified the need for adequate health care and joined forces with doctors and nurses from Meharry Medical College to provide black Mississippians with medical care. This legacy of leadership and self-help allowed the former residents of Davis Bend Plantation to revitalize the community after economic hardships threatened their oasis in the Delta.
