1. Black Sea Diary : Every Picture Ever Taken :: 1993

    03:33:00

    from Philip Pocock / Added

black & white digital images; 3 hours 33 minutes 03 seconds. 1065 digital photographs transmitted from the road which led Felix Stephan Huber and myself, Philip Pocock, over a recently opened Eastern Europe, Hungary and Romania, to the Black Sea 1993. The destination of these early digital images -- made with a point-and-shoot Logitech camera that looked more like an electric razer than a camera -- was Venice, the Electronic Cafe at the Biannual. The images arrived as FAXes via a laptop with Modem. They arrived as a scroll, interspersed with text. Edited, this project resulted in a book Black Sea Dairy, Patrick Frey Editions, Scalo Verlag, New York, Zurich. The introduction to the book is titled: Timelines, Touris Bubbles, Transmission Errors, which already communicates the critical points this virtual narrative and very early code-image project speculates upon. W.J.T. Mitchell is a scholar and theorist of media, visual art, and literature associated with the emergent fields of visual culture and iconology (the study of images across the media). This lecture argues against the view that digital photography does not have the firm grip on reality that was claimed by traditional photography. On the contrary, as Mitchell explains, digital photography offers a “double entry bookkeeping” of reality that “expands the potential scope of photographic truth-claims along with the potential for lying.” A Professor of English and Art History at the University of Chicago, Mitchell is editor of the interdisciplinary journal, Critical Inquiry, and the author of numerous publications including What Do Pictures Want? The Lives and Loves of Images (2005). Video courtesy of Chicago Access Network Television (CAN TV)
