Jim Zura and his production associates traveled through Texas to capture the story of how school districts were affected by the the impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, how they dealt with them, and the lessons learned in the process. Areas around Beaumont suffered a direct hit from Rita. Districts in East Texas were overwhelmed as tens of thousands of fleeing motorists converged on schools, seeking food and shelter. The team conducted interviews with 18 key people; including district superintendents, district staff, and government officials in producing this 25-minute documentary. jim@zuraproductions.com

This paper proposes a novel disaster management system called HAC-ER that addresses some of the challenges faced by emergency responders by enabling humans and agents, using state-of-the-art algorithms, to collaboratively plan and carry out tasks in teams referred to as human-agent collectives. In particular, HAC-ER utilises crowdsourcing combined with machine learning to extract situational awareness information from large streams of reports posted by members of the public and trusted organisations. We then show how this information can inform human-agent teams in coordinating multi-UAV deployments as well as task planning for responders on the ground. Finally, HAC-ER incorporates a tool for tracking and analysing the provenance of information shared across the entire system. In summary, this paper describes a prototype system, validated by real-world emergency responders, that combines several state-of-the-art techniques for integrating humans and agents, and illustrates, for the first time, how such an approach can enable more effective disaster response operations.

At Cisco India, we focus on addressing social issues where we believe we can have significant and lasting impact by applying our unique expertise to those issues. For example, after floods devastated rural communities in Northern Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in October 2009, Cisco committed US$10 million in cash, services, solutions and equipment to support rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in the Raichur district of Karnataka. We called it Project Samudaya and our goal was to create a modern, rural community by giving it access to urban amenities such as quality healthcare and education. We deployed the Cisco Education Enabled Delivery (CEED) platform in Raichur to deliver remote education, and the Cisco HealthPresence solution to improve access to medical treatment and access to specialist consultants. Thousands of patients have benefited. Read More: http://3blmedia.com/News/Cisco-Recognized-CSR-Excellence-India © 2015 | 3BL Media/Cisco | All Rights Reserved

In September of 2013, torrents of rain resulted in unprecedented flooding in the mountains and plains of northeastern Colorado. This video tells the story of how congregations and individuals in the Rocky Mountain Synod of the ELCA came together to do God's work with their own hands. Much of the work was coordinated by Brea Hapken, the disaster relief coordinator in 2014, provided by funds from ELCA Disaster Response.

Ladies and Gentlemen., http://www.disasterresponse.org.uk Strategic hardware to increase resilience following any natural disaster is required immediately following the aftermath of such an event. An ultra large mobile sea-based floating unit can carry significant equipment, supplies, utilities and a trained crew to wherever they are needed instantaneously needed. International Disaster Rescue's mission is to save, support, and sustain human lives through the utilisation of a large capital marine asset specifically developed in preparation of such a situation. Currently, nothing like this is in existence for rapid reaction and life support. This proactive forward thinking solution will help mitigate the more profound challenges we are facing in coastal regions from the increasing rises in sea levels, coastal floods and storm surges much of which is being compounded by the effects of climate change. Being prepared is the key to disaster response. Have a look at my above video and please join me in the funding of the design of such a vessel for the future, as a first step to making this vessel be one step closer to being in the Water. Disasters are happening regularly and we need to be better prepared. Please donate on our website or our Kickstarter Campaign starts on 1st Nov 2014. Your name will be written into the Vessel's Preliminary specification for posterity. Many Thanks. Kind Regards. Andy Deaner. www. disasterresponse.org.uk
