The Subdeacon is somewhat of a mystery to the modern Catholic because we don't see much of him anymore. Even before Vatican II when the Usus Antiquior was more commonplace, you would only see the Subdeacon at a Solemn Mass. After the Council, the Subdeacon was abrogated, rendering its function invisible to the worshiper; yet his function persisted, primarily because his responsibilities were virtually indispensable. At present, you will only see the Subdeacon in the Solemn Mas within the Usus Antiquior, that is, the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. You will also find him in the Solemn Dominican Rite, which this photo montage will show (go to http://lifebyjesson.com/lifeblog/the-subdeacon-2/ for a description of the photos). I am thankful to the Dominican Order for permitting me to function as a Subdeacon. While I am not formally a Subdeacon, I am an instituted acolyte and lector, which, at the present moment, gives me the ability to function in this invaluable role. I received the ministries of acolyte and lector during my studies in the Western Province of the Dominican Order in the United States. I am currently the Director of Liturgy and Music at Blessed Sacrament Church, a Dominican parish in Seattle.
