How to Donate? Donate whatever amount you can. You may donate through credit/debit card via Indiegogo as seen in the following link: http://igg.me/at/theimpowerproject/x/11017991 What is I’mPOWER? I’mPOWER stands for Program on Wellness, Empowerment and Rehabilitation. It is a play on the word empower as the program hopes to empower children with disabilities to perform activities of daily living in spite of their conditions. The project started in CBR-SMILE which stands for Community Based Rehabilitation - Samahan ng mga Magulang na Iniingatan ang Lahat ng Batang Espesyal (translated: Community of parents that care for children with special needs). CBR-SMILE is a rehabilitation center in Payatas, Quezon City, Philippines that caters to children diagnosed with motor disabilities. The program focused on utilizing Dance Movement Therapy, an emerging rehabilitation intervention that would supplement the traditional means of physical therapy being provided in CBR-SMILE. This allows the children to access rehabilitation outside formal institutions, providing a lively and fun atmosphere that serves as a motivation to boost frequency of physical therapy. Who does I’mPOWER cater to? The program’s initial focus are children from CBR-SMILE who have been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, a congenital disorder that permanently affects body movement and muscle coordination. These children have lack of voluntary coordination of muscle movements, muscle stiffness and involuntary spasms. Some of the participants in the program also have clubfoot or congenital talipes equinovarus, a foot deformity which cause limitations in standing and walking. As the program grows and as we gain more funding, we hope to expand and be able to cater to other community-based rehabilitation centers and ideally, reach out to children with other motor as well as mental and psychological disabilities. What kind of Dance Therapy is offered? A dance therapy module which integrates physical therapy methods into dance movements that children can associate with day-to-day functions was created for the participants of the program. The module is an aerobics-style step-by-step dance along video that focuses on upper extremities, lower extremities and both combined. The module was given to them in a CD that could be played in their televisions at home to make therapy more accessible to them. This allowed them to bring the therapy to their own households as going to the center was a difficult task for them already. Unfortunately, not all families have house appliances (i.e. CD/DVD player) or electricity that are needed to play the CD containing the dance therapy module. This is why we want to provide the center with portable DVD players that the families may borrow to play the CDs in their homes. What are the results of the I’mPOWER Prototype? For the first six months of the program, mobility and functional ability were measured by taking the range of motion (ROM) of upper and lower extremities before and after application of the intervention. At the end of six months, the program showed a 65% increase in ROM (Wilcoxon-signed rank test) with effectiveness ranging from 32%-77% compared to baseline. Qualitative analysis also showed improved day-to-day functions. How can you help? Through additional support, I’mPOWER hopes to raise at least $3,000 to cover expenses for the production of succeeding dance videos and purchase of portable DVD players that the families can use for these videos. Anything beyond that amount will be used to support the center renovation and start-up cardboard furniture social enterprise—other projects of I’mPOWER that are under way.
