Recently the Jazz Standard, one of New York City’s premier jazz clubs, has been celebrating their 10th Anniversary. Over the last week, one of jazz music’s icons and innovators took to the stage bring another celebratory presence to the venue. The club hosted Dr. Lonnie Smith as well as serve as the official kick-off of his brand new record release for “The Healer” on his Pilgrimage Records imprint. The disc is a new live trio recording partially recorded at The Jazz Standard as well as the Lamantin Jazz Festival held in Hungary. “The Healer” also features Dr. Smith’s new trio featuring Jamire Williams on drums and Jonathan Kreisberg on guitar. It was also the the 70th birthday of the legendary organist and fronted two units for this special week. Dr. Smith’s Trio as well as the “In The Beginning” Octet played to critically acclaimed performances and sold-out sets. Born Lonnie Smith on July 3,1942 in Buffalo, New York. Lonnie grew up never taking formal music lessons and began playing the coronet while he was in middle school. It was by way of record store owner Art Kubera in his hometown that he gave him a Hammond B-3 that was sitting in the back of the store.Lonnie was always playing music on the local scene that fine tuned his musical skills on the organ. He later moved to New York City where he met future bandmate and later dear friend, guitarist George Benson. Benson formed his first group at the time and the two would record two records on the Columbia Records label in the mid-1960’s. The two would later back-up the legendary alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson for the legendary Blue Note recording date “Alligator Boogaloo.” Both Benson and Smith were in high demand as a sessions musicians as well as becoming leaders. Lonnie signed with Blue Note and from there he recorded a new sound on the Hammond-B3 unlike his contemporaries like Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, and Richard “Groove” Holmes. Over the last 4 decades Dr. Smith released over 30 records and continues tour regularly. His latest disc “The Healer” is a live trio recording featuring Jamire Williams on drums and Jonathan Kreisberg on guitar.
