The documentary shows the impressive mobilization mission of a Boskalis cutter dredge vessel and its supporting vessels through the jungle of Surinam. Boskalis contracted Dutch transport experts for the mission from AbuDhabi to the bauxite mine at Lelydorp near Paramaribo. An almost impossible operation is made to a success by the team of the Boskalis men. The Orion cutter dredge is transported to a bauxite mine for the excavation of bauxite in Surinam. The musical composition Thorn is aptly named. Its relentless spiking attacks are placed into the context of the destructive machinations of Sumpter Oregon’s historic dredge and its insatiable churning in its quest for gold. Harmonies are foregone in favor of unrelenting phrases requiring Molly herself to act as the dispassionate cog in the endlessly turning wheels of uncertain resolution. Molly Barth - Flute David Lang - Composer Filmmaking by Bluedot Productions Filmed at the dredge in Sumpter Oregon. http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_239.php Molly Barth acknowledges the support of the Office for Research, Innovation and Graduate Education, University of Oregon.

Newcastle Harbour on a grey day - peaceful but active at the same time. Harbour and beach live in a nice juxtaposition with the lighthouse overlooking and serving both. The beach shown is Nobby's Beach where, on the 8th June 2007 during a fierce storm the bulk carrier Pasha Bulker ran aground and was stuck there until refloated successfully on July 2nd.

The underwater realm is often a place of mystery – full of diverse creatures that are known to science, but rarely seen by most people. That is changing quickly as more sophisticated underwater digital cameras provide clearer views of what can be found just off our coasts. The technology is also advancing marine research by allowing scientists to capture comprehensive views of the ocean floor. The University of Delaware's research vessel Hugh R. Sharp is making use of such technology to help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) survey scallop populations along the mid-Atlantic coast. NOAA has conducted the survey annually since 1979 by dredging specific sample areas to collect scallops and calculate population numbers. The R/V Sharp has been used for the surveys since 2008, when NOAA's own ship, the Albatross IV, was retired after 45 years of service. The R/V Sharp is outfitted with a full range of oceanographic equipment and instrumentation, including fiber-optic wire. Researchers are using that wire with an underwater video system, called the Habitat Mapping Camera System (HabCam), to help NOAA compare scallop counts collected via traditional dredging methods to the numbers they can actually see along the ocean floor of the same sampling areas. Find out more about this research effort and see some of the images that have been captured by the HabCam on the R/V Sharp in this video story.
