Continuing the Conversation Webinar, May 15, 2014 Speaker: William McCarthy Professor Department of Health Policy & Management UCLA Fielding School of Public Health Co-Director, UCLA/USC Center for Population Health & Health Disparities The U.S. Department of Agriculture distilled the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans into seven consumer-friendly messages highlighted on the website: www.choosemyplate.gov. A distinctive feature of these new messages is the recommendation for Americans to fill half their plate with fruits and vegetables. In this webinar, Dr. William McCarthy will discuss why increasing fruit and vegetable consumption is likely more beneficial to health than other traditional methods, such as calorie-counting and reading food labels. Dr. McCarthy will also describe how trained community health workers are coaching low-income residents of East Los Angeles to make changes in their homes so that choosing healthier foods and increasing physical activity are both easier and more sustainable.

              • HUMELA: East LA street singer, Jose Gonzales

Watch this amazing East LA street singer, Jose Gonzales! This was one of the many priceless moments during our HUMELA (Humans of East LA) photo/ story workshop a couple weeks back. My students decided to photograph and interview him singing to the crowd at Tacos Baja Ensenada on Whittier Boulevard. …. This is only one of many exquisitely filmed videos made that day by the incredibly talented HUMELA mentor, Michael Dooley. Merci, Michael! … my student's interview with him: "Jose Gonzales worked as a panadero (baker) for 35 years. He retired from that job due to health issues, and now makes a living singing on the streets and at restaurants in East LA. Mr. Gonzales told us that his happiest moments are always when he's singing. Some days he doesn't make much money but his profession brings him joy. He has written two songs, one called " El Mercadito" which he performed for us. He is a great example of perseverance. Many would have given up in his situation because the pay of being a street singer is often low but he just continues to use his gift to make a living and to find joy in every day." www.HUMELA.com
