In the run up to the British Art Show 8 which opens in Leeds in October, we've made a series of films spotlighting different aspects of the visual art scene in the city. The first film is about interactive arts organisation Invisible Flock. Invisible Flock formed in 2009 and consist of three lead artists: Ben Eaton, Victoria Pratt and Richard Warburton, Company Director Catherine Baxendale and Digital Technical Assistant Henry Clay. They specialise in creating interactive artworks where audience participation forms an integral part of each project. In June 2015 we went along to their office at East Street Arts to find out more about what they do. This series of films is supported by Leeds Inspired. Leeds Inspired is part of the city's cultural programme that celebrates arts events and projects throughout the year, supporting high quality, accessible cultural experiences for Leeds’s residents and visitors. Founded in 2012, Leeds Inspired supports culture in the city through grants schemes, commissions and a 'What's On' events website. Leeds Inspired is part of Leeds City Council. http://invisibleflock.com/ http://startliveart.com/ http://www.leedsinspired.co.uk/ http://britishartshow8.com/

November brings our second Members Residency with London-based artist Richard Stone moving to Leeds to work from Patrick Studios Project Space. Richard’s works materialise in many forms from objects and installation through to site-specific interventions, exploring themes of self, place, absence and transience. Existing materials and found objects are seductively reworked or reconfigured through physical processes and conceptually layered strategies. Richard’s pieces have included figures engulfed in ghostly auras of smooth amorphous wax, erased landscapes, assemblages of earth, flowers, salt and other delicate ephemera, and performative works. The residency coincides with a point of departure in his practice, and he seeks to develop new approaches and to experiment with new materials and methods of display for his sculptural and installation work.

Sitting in my student, back-to-back house in Beeston, Leeds in the early 80s, I experienced an extraordinary sonic phenomenon: 40,000 voices raised in a vast cheer burst into the sitting room, followed by urgent chanting and a massively disappointed "ohhh.." It was unexpected (did I even know there was a football ground nearby?) and chilling yet very moving. These voices, raw, in atavistic unison impinged on the mundane activities of my everyday life. This surreal incongruity of hearing but not seeing the source of so many voices erupting uninvited into my house occurred on many subsequent Saturdays and I came to quite enjoy the unsolicited mass companionship. The memory has stayed with me ever since.

A little celebration of shades of blue and Berlin. The film was hand-processed and then toned blue in a bucket. With love and thanks to East Street Arts - most of this film was shot in Berlin while on an ESA Christmas art trip! x

Quarry Hill Creates: co[LAB] 2011 A partnership project with organisations based on the Quarry Hill site, Leeds. Each of the organisations (Yorkshire Dance, Leeds College of Music, Red Ladder, Phoenix Dance Theatre, East Street Arts, West Yorkshire Playhouse amongst others) individually invited artists to apply. This brought together an exciting mix of artists across art forms to take part in a three day interdisciplinary workshop facilitated by Wendy Houstoun. The aim was to explore new territory, speak each other's language and find new approaches to interdisciplinary practice with no pressure on final outcome.
