Have you ever headed to the Emergency Room for a quick response to a medical issue, only to find yourself in a crowded waiting room? Many hospitals find themselves in that exact situation as demand for services rises, while cost pressures constrain the available staffing for safe, high quality medical care. For the past decade, Covidien has used Lean Six Sigma methodology to drive performance in the manufacture of medical supplies and devices. With pull from their hospital customers, they have expanded the Operational Excellence team to support the implementation of Lean Six Sigma in hospitals. A frequent request is for help in improving ED patient flow and capacity. The presenter, Michelle Johnson from Covidien, shares lessons learned in analyzing patient flow, optimizing use of resources, and implementing changes in the fast-paced Emergency department environment. This session provides insight into how Covidien has applied Lean Six Sigma methodology in the hospital environment including: - Introducing Value Stream Maps to understand barriers to flow - Analyzing constraints and variation through multiple flow pathways - Using modeling and simulation tools to assess the impact of potential improvements - Implementing standard work to sustain the gains in key operational metrics

This was shot over the 6 months with a simple handheld SONY 1000 DVC video with a few still images. The program was produced utilizing Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator and Motion 5.

I came home tired from the ER but excited about how my "doctor friend" transitioned two patients to hospice care in one shift. Wow! We should be doing this in Emergency Departments across the nation! Doctors call your local hospices to find ways to collaborate... then go to my website http://www.oktodie.com/ to learn more!

Dr Mark Williams and Dr Saad Jawaid talk about the use of a simulation dummy in the Emergency Department. They suggest this hi-fidelity mannequin provides a fantastic educational tool for all disciplines and is great for team working. The 'sim culture' in ED is proving its worth for improving patient outcomes, and its use could be replicated elsewhere in the Trust.
