It takes a drought sometimes for a fresh approach to catch on. An NPR Morning Edition program (January 2015) was about the urban planners in Los Angeles seeing the need to view the city as a sponge, absorbing water, rather than corralling, then whisking it away down the drain and into our waterways. “Engineering water into submission” is how they talked about it on NPR and it dates back to the Romans and aqueducts. It also is how I got to the idea of retrofitting existing surface parking lots to be spongy ones as part of my neighborhood work as a sustainability advocate. • Geothermal: A Green Energy Solution?

            from Wilder Nicholson Added 5 1 0

Geothermal power is widely seen as a sustainable solution to our world's energy challenges. Iceland is one of the leading countries in geothermal energy utilization; however, scientists and NGOs in Iceland have recently noticed health risks from air pollution, negative environmental impacts from wastewater, seismic activity from re-injection, and exhaustion of the resource. This project was funded by the Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain Scholarship of Bowdoin College, and filmed during my spring break of 2015.

The humble water vole is one of Britain's best loved animals. Famed as 'Ratty' in 'The Wind in the Willows', the water vole has been under threat for decades. These docile creatures, once a regular sight on riverbanks and waterside locations everywhere in the UK, have been hunted to the brink of extinction by predators, including North American Mink released from fur farms by animal activists. Now the South Downs National Park Authority have begun an ambitious project to re-introduce 'Ratty' to riverbanks across Hampshire. This film tells the story of one release day - on the River Meon, a stretch of water controlled by the Portsmouth Services Fly Fishing Association. Hope you enjoy it.

                    from Hee Jayn Added 0 0 0

Taking inspiration from Sylvia Stults's poem, the concept predicts the polluted environment not so far but soon in the future, executed in 3D platform. The imaginary world is full of surprise but the reality is always true. The poem: Awareness About Our Environment Broken bottles and charred pieces of glass Wadded up newspapers tossed on the grass Pouring of concrete and tearing out trees This is the environment that surrounds me? Poisons and insecticides sprayed on our food Oceans filling with thick oil crude All sea life destined to a slow awful doom These are the things we are to consume? Mills pumping out iron expelling yellow fumes Airlines emitting caustic gases from fuels Weapons of destruction tested at desolate sites And this is the air that's to sustain life? There has to be something that someone can do Like raise the awareness to those around you That if we don't heed the problem at hand It's your life that's at stake, the destruction of man. -Sylvia Stults-
