    • MFF 2013 Tribute: George Tillman Jr.

      from Milwaukee Film Added 58 0 0

In 2013, the Milwaukee Film Festival was proud to pay tribute to acclaimed writer/producer/director George Tillman Jr. Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI (where he attended John Marshall High School), Tillman directed his first feature film, SCENES FOR THE SOUL, in 1991. But it was his follow-up-- SOUL FOOD-- that made him a household name. From there, Tillman went on to direct MEN OF HONOR (starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert De Niro), then shifted gears to become executive producer of SOUL FOOD: THE SERIES for Showtime, and co-producer of BARBERSHOP (the most profitable African-American-themed film of all time), BARBERSHOP 2: BACK IN BUSINESS, BEAUTY SHOP, and the 1970s-inspired ROLL BOUNCE. After nearly a decade away, Tillman returned to directing with NOTORIOUS, the edgy biopic of slain rapper Notorious B.I.G., followed by the action film FASTER, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton. On Saturday, September 28, George Tillman Jr. took the stage at the Oriental Theatre for a one-night-only screening of his latest film, THE INEVITABLE DEFEAT OF MISTER AND PETE. Joined by the film's writer, fellow Milwaukee native Michael Starrbury, as well as the young stars of the film (Skylan Brooks and Ethan Dizon), Tillman stood before a sold-out Milwaukee Festival crowd, screened his film, took part in an audience Q+A, and accepted a mayoral proclamation declaring September 28 "George Tillman Jr. Day."
