Omo Child rescues and cares for Mingi children located in the Omo River Valley region of Southwest Ethiopia. Omo Child’s Mission is to stop Mingi, the ritualistic killing of infants and children, and to provide education and a safe, nurturing shelter for rescued children. These children will be future leaders in their tribes and communities. Our immediate goal is to raise money to care for our 37 children that have already been rescued and need food, shelter and education. On July 14th, due in large part to the efforts of Lale Labuko and John Rowe, the Kara Tribe held a ceremony that officially ended Mingi in their culture. Immediately following the ceremony John and Lale reflected on the day's historic event.

Award-winning filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) document the SMMoA exhibition "Elias Sime: Eye of the Needle, Eye of the Heart." Using yarn, plastics, tattered fabric, buttons, used plastic, and bottle tops, each of the collages and stitched canvases Elias Sime creates for "Elias Sime: Eye of the Needle, Eye of the Heart" represent a complete essay about the current state of his surroundings. Sime’s three-dimensional sculptures are made with traditional organic Ethiopian building materials such as mud and straw, as well as wood, metal, and other found objects, gathered in part by neighborhood children. A highlight of the exhibition is a series of striking thrones made of leather, wood, mud and straw, which will be integrated into conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen’s final Los Angeles Philharmonic concerts staged by Sellars in mid-April. 2009.

A total of 180 million food-insecure people live in Sub-Saharan Africa, over 21 per cent of the African population. These are among the world’s most vulnerable people, poorly equipped to respond to the threat of climate change, demographic stresses, or spikes in global food prices. I spent five weeks of my summer in Ethiopia taking short film classes, sharing the gospel, playing with children and making new friends. I wasn't able to film nearly as much as I wanted to (it rained so much I was always afraid to bring my camera places) but this is a small bit of what we saw and did. Filmed on a Canon 60D, mostly on an 18-135mm lens, a few shots on my 50mm . Edited and colored in Final Cut Pro X.
