1. Saving the Proof

    from Karen Holmes Added 2 0 0

SAVING THE PROOF is a complex transformation of an ordinary action: a woman walking. While the camera records visual information present at the moment the shutter is open, this information is fragmented, circumstantial evidence of presence. It is not the whole truth. The woman’s identity is imagined by adding, subtracting, repeating, layering and altering the images to provide an order that gives unity to the fragmented information, evoking a sense of personal fracture, disintegration, search and rediscovery. 16mm, color/sound, 11 minutes, 1979

short experimental musical film. The Suns activity is indicated by small spots on it's surface. In 2009 the dissappearence of sunspots for three years baffled scientists worldwide. Inspired by real images of the Sun, Enrique Mendoza composed an acousmatic piece based on the Sun's massive power, making unconventional use of a piano. Johannes Hogebrink visualized the music, using scientific imagery shot by satellites aswell as telescopes around the globe.. The Silence of the Sun transmits a mixture of incomprehensibility and fascination for our star.

              • Kit Kat: Free No-WiFi Zone

Free WiFi is available everywhere we go. People are constantly online, busy with their electronic gadgets all the time. As Kit Kat we saw that as an opportunity to give people a break. So instead of offering Free WiFi like every other brand, we created a Free No-WiFi Zone. A big sign with a small WiFi jammer that blocked all signals within a five meter radius. By doing that we encouraged people to read a newspaper, a real book or have a genuine conversation again. All while munching on a Kit Kat. Our little stunt had a bigger impact than we expected. Free No-WiFi Zone started conversation about the need for places where we can disconnect. Just the kind of attention we were looking for.

This is for my grad show space. I wanted people to remember my name and have fun, so what better way than giving them a small puzzle. If everyone is far away, nothing happens and they can watch my reel. But if they step closer, they slowly reveal part of my name with particles. And with teamwork, they can reveal my whole name. This achieves multiple things. First, it's a great way to snap people from an observing state to an active, fun state. Second, it's a great way to attract more people to my space. And finally, it's a great ice breaker to talk about my motion and installation work. How I did it? By smashing two processing libraries (openKinect and openCV) along with some custom particle coding, I was able to make certain depths become particle emitters. These particles then travel to the middle, but along the way, they get stuck on my name.

Two images on the TV screen: An Israeli soldier being lynched in Ramallah. A Palestinian child and his father being fired at in Gaza. How can horror be constructed in words? It's a schizophrenic situation - two sides trapped in a cycle of violence. Being in a personal schizophrenic state as well, watching this in New York - not here nor there. Are these images real?
