Please support our film! http://www.seedandspark.com/studio/neither-shadow-turning This test was done primarily to test the use of hand held camera movement for a scene in my film, Neither Shadow of Turning. We will be shooting on 16mm Kodak film and an Aaton XTR Prod S16 camera. I initially did not see any of this film handheld, but when the co-director suggested it for one of the scenes we thought why not go out and test shoot something with a similar mood/feel. At the time, we sort of luckily happened upon this lens by Dog Schidt Optiks FF58 and I had wanted to test this lens for a long time. This lens has very specific characteristics with it's 2x Oval fixed aperture. The background bokeh reacts very similarly to 2x Anamorphic lenses. I was very impressed by the optical effects I was able to achieve with this and although it is not the right lens for our short film, I look forward to using it on something soon. If you like the test, please visit our campaign page and contribute whatever you can to the film - every little bit helps. Also, please feel free to share our content with anyone who might be interested. Thank you for your support! http://www.dogschidtoptiks.co.uk A demonstration of a lens build I undertook this evening. Being fixed at F5.6 most would instantly disregard the option, however a client opted for such lens and I took it upon myself to shoot this demonstration to show how the smaller aperture does not always mean less character. specs are:- 2x oval aperture fixed at f5.6 blue / purple bi-colour tint low dirt - moderate cleaning marks 'low' contrast Nikon mount The oval aperture height is approximately the same as the total diameter of a f2.8 circular aperture meaning dof is similar to a f2.8 lens. However the width of the aperture is approximately the same as the diameter of a f8-f11 aperture. The result is a lens with capability to separate in and out of focus subjects (since dof is similar to a f2.8 lens), while being supremely sharp (similar to a lens set to f8-f11). Additionally the small width of the aperture is delivering a greater image circle width (sensor coverage is wider when apertures are closed down) - the result is less vignette on the furthest edges of the frame and better edge to edge imaging capabilities with ultra low mono and chromatic aberrations. Rather than an 'image circle' this lens delivers an 'image oval' - the image projected on the sensor is wider than it is tall. As with all oval aperture lenses from DSO, the footage needs no 'desqueezing' as would normally be required when shooting with a true anamorphic lens. As a result a full 16:9 format frame can be delivered, with the desirable waterfall bokeh aesthetic associated with anamorphic lenses. camera: Sony A7s 'Neutral' -3,0,-3 PP - OFF AWB 25p XAVC-s post: rgb curves - moderate adjustment to correct for green cast caused by LED's (IKEA Jansjo desk lamps 3w) mild boost in saturation mild boost in contrast +10 sharpening 2% monochromatic noise (to provide vimeo compression something to bite into and limit banding/blocking)
