    • From Soap Boxes to Tea Sets: How the Suffragette Movement got into People's Hearts and Homes

      from Gresham College Added 1,100 4 0

The women in the suffrage movement were modern day experts on public campaigning, infiltrating hearts and homes with messages for 'the cause'. Antonia Byatt, who was the first director of The Women's Library, looks at some of the techniques they used to get the women's vote into the public mind. From public marches across the country (with all the associated press coverage) to badges, teacups and cook books, they were highly skilled at taking the campaign into people's everyday lives. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/from-soap-boxes-to-tea-sets-how-the-suffragette-movement-got-into-people%E2%80%99s Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. • Artist Films 2011- Catherine Bertola

from CVAN, North East Added 296 0 0

Catherine Bertola is an artist living and working in the North East of England. Bertola makes temporary interventions that respond to existing sites, objects and drawings in order to uncover and re-animate their forgotten histories. She considers the physical residue of the past as raw material for her works, often focussing on such things as historic buildings, photographs and archives. This practice of adaptation is used as a means to reframe the past for the viewer, in order to promote a reconsideration of the histories with which she engages. Bertola has held a range of solo and group exhibitions, both within the UK and internationally. She has recently presented solo exhibitions at the Bronte Parsonage Museum, Haworth [2011]; Workplace Gallery, Gateshead [2009]; and Galerie M+R Fricke, Berlin [2008]. She has also participated in notable group exhibitions such as Personal Tempest at the Neue Gallery, Innsbruck, Austria [2011] and Out of the Ordinary, V&A, London [2007]. More information on the artist can be found at http://www.workplacegallery.co.uk/artists/_Catherine%20Bertola
