Interview with Folkert de Jong about his installation "Actus Tragicus" 23/03/2013 - 08/09/2013 @ Mudam Luxembourg - Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean At first glance, the three-dimensional pictures by the Dutch artist Folkert de Jong appear seductive and disturbing in equal measure. De Jong generally turns the exhibition space into a theatre stage, for which he designs sceneries made, with great virtuosity, from polyurethane foam, an unusual material in sculpture. Often inspired by historic facts, real persons or memorable episodes from art history, his works unfold in complex compositions that confront the viewer with extremely tangible directness. In response to an invitation from Mudam, de Jong presents Actus Tragicus, an ensemble of new works that he has created especially for the Grand Hall. For the artist, this central space in the museum possesses the intimidating dominance of a cathedral or mausoleum, while also being perfect for theatrical presentations, with a balcony to observe from a distance. Ten larger than life figures, whose physiognomies, like a déjà-vu experience, remind the viewer of something familiar, dangle from the heights of the glass dome like marionettes (or hanged people). De Jong's source of inspiration for this bizarre dance of the figures, between which viewers have to make their way as if they were part of the performance, is the painting The Fight Between Carnival and Lent by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, painted in 1559. A crude mixture of allegory and realism, this crowd scene in the typical Bruegel manner contrasts vice and excess with virtue and abstinence in innumerable individual scenes. The conflict between the extremes of human existence, between ascetic discipline and intemperate pleasure, which comprehends some of the existential questions of humankind that is torn between heaven and earth, is also the focus of de Jong's installation. From time immemorial, people have sought answers to questions regarding power and religion, eternity and finiteness, life and death. These questions are also evoked by Actus Tragicus, as in the early funeral cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach, also known under the title Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit (God’s time is the very best time), that gives the work its name. Brought into a contemporary form using modern means and materials, the round dance of the figures involves the viewers in a drama to which each contributes with his or her own role. In this way, de Jong creates a tableau vivant in which the grotesque and the macabre alternate with the light and the airy. Folkert de Jong was born in 1972 in Egmond aan Zee, Netherlands. He lives and works in Amsterdam.

The Dutch sculptor Folkert de Jong (1972, Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands) was been invited in 2006 to exhibit in the Middelheim Museum the work The Sculptor, The Devil andThe Architect making striking use of polyurethane foam to produce a compelling tableau that immediately called into question both the sculptural tradition and his own place in it. Now, seven years later, in a solo exhibition entitled Amabilis Insania / The Pleasing Delusion we see a different Folkert de Jong. Inspired by the historical context of the Middelheim park and a newfound fascination with the casting process, this is the first time that de Jong works in bronze.

In the video series 'Makers', ARTtube visits the studios of artists who distinguish themselves by using innovative materials and techniques. How do they innovate, and what are they inspired by? The second video in this series is about a controversial material, used in the Netherlands for the insulation of houses, but also in contemporary art: polyurethane foam (PUR). What does PUR mean in the work of three very different artists - Rob Birza, Folkert de Jong and New Sculpture Department (NSD)? Folkert de Jong uses PUR intensively. In his studio, he explains why he uses a material that is not designed for artistic purposes and how he has learned to master it. Marie-José Eijkemans, Head of Education at museum De Pont (Tilburg) shows the museum's smallest sculpture: 'The Angel of Tilburg'. In the early 1990s a former wool spinnery in Tilburg was transformed into museum De Pont. Artist Rob Birza was inspired by a piece of PUR insulation he found during the renovations and made this work especially for the museum. We also filmed the demolition of the work of New Sculpture Department during the 'Pupil/Master' exhibition at De Pont. Kees Boevé & Lorenzo Quintanilla from NSD explain why they used PUR for this installation. The exhibition 5 years Pupil/Master project was on show at De Pont until 22 September 2013. The installation The Primacy of Matter over Thought by Folkert de Jong is on show until 5 January 2014 during the exhibition The Anatomy Lesson at Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. Watch an ARTtube video in which Folkert de Jong talks about this work. The sculpture The Angel of Tilburg (1992) is a gift from Rob Birza to museum De Pont, Tilburg. Dutch artist Folkert De Jong has drawn on the collections held by the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds as a starting point for his new site-specific commission, in particular, the personal armour of Henry VIII and contemporary modern firearms. For the first time De Jong has used 3D scanning technologies in his practice, used to create bronze casts of Henry VIII’s suits of armour, contemporary weapons such as machine and hand guns. The striking installation also features an armada of bronze ships displayed in florescent display cases, as well as casts of a gramophone, an old fashioned camera and telephone. Exhibition runs Wednesday 1 October 2014 - Sunday 25 January 2015. Free Admission. www.hepworthwakefield.org/whatson/conflict-and-collisions/ Supported by The Mondriaan Fund, James Cohan Gallery & The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
