1. Stories from the Struggle for Civil Rights

In September 2012 we invited a group of 10 senior citizens from the Baltimore metro area to meet with UMBC students under the direction of oral historian, dramaturg, and performance director, Harriet Lynn. The group came together once a week for three months to write and to tell stories from their personal experience with the struggle for civil rights. As compelling tales emerged from those story workshops, a community was formed amongst the director, participants, and students. These same compelling, stories are shared in performances offered free to school children and the public at locations around Baltimore in February 2013. In late spring 2013, UMBC students will upload digital versions of these stories to the web. For more details on the project, including performance venues, the digital stories, and an upcoming documentary film about this project, curated by Sandra Abbott, for Center for Art, Design & Visual Culture, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, see the project website, foralltheworldtohear.org. This project was made possible by a grant from the Maryland Humanities Council, through support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
