Fourth of July Quotes: Independence Day May the sun in his course visit no land more free, more happy, more lovely, than this our own country! ~Daniel Webster “Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.” – Benjamin Franklin “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty.” – John Fitzgerald Kennedy Battle Lines Show Keywords: American Independence, fourth of July, fireworks, facts, civil war, Military, Johnny cash, Ragged old flag, Egypt, Morsi, White House, African trip, Air force one costs, Clappers lies, Inmates, gladiators, Historical events, , Warn Radio, Watchman, Warrior, current news, Prophecy Scripture: Press towards the Mark! Php 3:10-15 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. 12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. As Americans, we enjoy the blessing of living in the most prosperous nation the world has ever known. We enjoy freedoms, opportunities, and luxuries that most of history could only dream of. America stands out from every other nation in history. Why? Because America was born differently than any other nation. She was founded on the principles of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As Andrew Jackson once said, “The Bible is the rock on which our Republic rests.” Ours is a nation that was founded by men of conviction and courage who stood on the very words of God. And we enjoy their blessed heritage to this very day."

Bill opens this weekend’s Moyers & Company with thoughts about the origins and lessons of Independence Day. We should remember, he says, that behind this Fourth of July holiday are human beings, like Thomas Jefferson, who were as flawed and conflicted as they were inspired, who espoused great humanistic ideals while behaving with reprehensible racial discrimination. That conflict -- between what we know and how we live -- is still a struggle in contemporary politics and society. No stranger to the contradictions of history and their racial touchpoints is Bill’s studio guest Khalil Muhammad. Head of the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Muhammad is the author of The Condemnation of Blackness, which connects American histories of race, crime and the making of urban America to modern headlines. Muhammad and Moyers discuss the importance of confronting the contradictions of America’s past.
