The 'Specimen tree' is an interactive solar powered public artwork, containing artificial flowers designed and developed by a group of local primary school pupils through botanical research and creative workshops. The video captures the imagination and design process of each participant's flower in the globes. The pieces document their interpretations of artificial life..."What if you could create a flower? Where flower specimens are inanimate objects until human interaction makes them come ‘alive’ by blowing into the globes the 'Breath of Life' concept is born. The sculpture is installed outside a Primary school in the Perth & Kinross region of Scotland. www.fraser-ross.com

DIY Pen Every pen bought, borrowed or stolen is disassembled to see what's inside... Could this continuous curiosity be conquered by starting with a pen already apart? The DIY pen is born from mass production,a flat packed object, investigating what forms can be created from flat sheet manufacturing and by the combination of two conflicting materials - Heat Shrink Rubber and Plywood. *Need a hairdryer or oven to heat-shrink the tubing around the plywood skeleton. Prototypes forming flowers using Flexinol (shape changing material), this small (3) batch project was to inform and experiment between man and nature...and just like flowers, each lamp is uniquely formed and hand-crafted retaining its own character. The idea is that a future range of flowers can be propagated from trees. www.fraser-ross.com

This is an expedition involving the artificial study of plant life. Ten propagated flowers from a living plant. Each flower has a 'death state', until human interaction triggers its 'life state' and just for a brief moment, you may recapture the flowers in full bloom. When the viewer blows into the specimen jars, each flower begins a shape change. Blowing is the appropriate interaction as trees and plants grow on carbon dioxide. Materials - Flexinol (shape changing wire), recycled electronic components, specimen jars. www.fraser-ross.com
