1. Dear GAVI: Help us reach more children with life-saving vaccines!

MSF has requested that GAVI and vaccine manufacturers extend their discounted prices to us and so far, we have been given the run-around. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and humanitarian actors are partners in extending access to vaccination. Particularly in the world’s poorest countries, we help deliver health services, and in some areas, NGOs are the only actors able to access children with vaccines. Help MSF: send GAVI a message on Twitter asking for them to open up their lower prices to non-governmental organisations and humanitarian actors like MSF now. Visit: www.msfaccess.org/dearGAVI

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is deeply concerned that the current global vaccination strategy is not paying enough attention to reaching the one in five babies born each year that continue to go without the very basic vaccination package. “There’s no reason children should still be dying of vaccine-preventable diseases. The global vaccines community could be doing a lot better to make sure all babies in developing countries are fully vaccinated against killer diseases. We need vaccines that are easier to use in hard-to-reach places.” Dr. Manica Balasegaram, Executive Director, MSF Access Campaign For more information on what MSF is seeking to reach the 22 million unreached children with life-saving vaccines, visit http://msfaccess.org/content/msf-2012-gavi-partners-forum

On 26 April 2012, Ghana became the first African country to introduce pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines at the same time, simultaneously tackling the leading causes of the world’s two biggest childhood killers – pneumonia and diarrhoea. This film, produced for the GAVI Alliance, documents the preparations, the launch ceremony and the aftermath. Ghana’s historic rollout marks a new milestone in a global initiative to reach children in developing countries with vaccines against the leading childhood killers. Pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines have respectively reached 17 and six GAVI-supported countries in the last couple of years, and are expected to reach more than 40 countries by 2015. Directed and edited by Ryan Youngblood Produced by Doune Porter Executive Producer Dan Thomas
