1. The Wrong Side (2001)

"There's tons of good surfers over here that would...that can't surf, 'cause there's no waves." -- Cam Powell "Over here" refers to the East Coast, more specifically, Virginia Beach, home to videographer Pat Stublen and most of his subjects. Over the next 45 minutes, Stublen goes on to prove both points from Powell's opening quote: there are good surfers around, and the waves do generally suck. In this, his second effort, Stublen's cast makes chest-high slop as exciting as possible without deviating from the accepted Taylor Steele mold. What we get is a by-the-book, surfer-by-surfer account of the best the Mid-Atlantic has to offer, as well as a random sampling of worldly notables such as Andy Irons, Kalani Robb and Chris Ward. Aside from forays back and forth across the state line to North Carolina to catch up with Hatteras locals Noah Snyder, Jeff Myers and Jesse Hines, The Wrong Side also dips down to Sebastian Inlet and over to California and Hawaii, rarely failing, however, in its adherence to mediocre surf. The highlight of the project, shot October 2 in Hatteras, captures the best day in several years with Hines and visiting Hawaiian Aamion Goodwin trading perfect standup barrels. It is the sort of day East Coasters live for, and it aptly demonstrates the Outer Banks' legendary assets. The local color, on the other hand, is confined to a couple drunken rednecks slurring about two of the area's favorite pastimes -- wrasslin' and breakin' beer bottles. The talent level in the water is decidedly more impressive. None of the local boys are nipping at Slater's heels (or even Bourgeois' for that matter), but they prove their mettle in the lineup. All are capable of launching the latest in airs and kick-flips, while a few combine the modern trickery with timeless power. The Outer Banks' contingent, led by Snyder, is the first legitimate gang to overcome the good-ole boy local mentality and expand their horizons beyond home. Well-represented in the media, the Carolinians uphold their reputations with solid surfing. Given his shoestring budget, Stublen has proven he is at least resourceful. The Wrong Side is certainly the best thing to come out of the area, and without the benefit of star quality surfers or surf, he has created a video worth checking out. With a heftier travel budget, or better yet a stellar season in his own back yard, he could create something worth watching more than once. -- Jason Borte

No other film succeeds so well in showing what the East Coast has to offer at home and abroad. You want to see the best of the young crew? Follow Benny B. and Peter Mendia on their global exploits. You want hard-charging legends? Check out Baron Knowlton's bravado as he battles giant Puerto Escondido. You want stunt pilots? Watch Matt Gilligan and Jeff Myers team up on Ozzie Wright. But the big star of the whole picture is the East Coast surf itself, as some of the most sickening sections are actually homebrewed, including the Isabel swell at an undisclosed sandbar that, much like this video, is yet to be topped.

There's something more special about footage that never get's the opportunity to see the light of day. Creating new memories is the biggest step in progressing forward, but it's those moments that we forget about, like this day, that make it that much better to watch years later. This day was something spectacular. I can repeat the story countless times over and over again but it would never do it justice, hopefully this helps. NO MORE TUBES
