A short film I made for my Avant Garde module for my university film course. I drew inspiration from the German expressionist films of the 1930's and 1940's. The film deals with the idea of how machine like human being are as they are programmable by signals like robots. For the film I directed and produced the film, as well as writing the script. I also mixed the sound and design the sound scape of the film with use of recording sounds and through foley artistry, I mixed it in Pro Tools.

An experimental film I am working on. This is an early version. Please note that this film will most likely not have its proper effect when played on a computer screen or even a television, as it was meant to be viewed with large projection in total darkness. This film is assembled from the German Expressionist classic films "Nosferatu" "Metropolis", and "Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari", all reduced in opacity, distorted, and played over one another. This film is available under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 United States (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US) license. Assembled by David F Kennedy

                  from Matthias Sperling / Added

Choreographer Matthias Sperling’s solo performance attempts to intervene in the history of a German Expressionist art object by dancing at it. While seemingly absurd, the attempt is also a genuine one: Sperling engages with the object as having experienced a traumatic past, with particular reference to the Nazi’s labelling of German Expressionist works as degenerate in 1937. His striving to effect a positive historical change through his movement becomes a way of questioning the apparent contrast between the ephemerality of action and the fixity of objects, and asking how our action in relation to artworks contributes to creating their identities. 'Effective Dance: healing procedure for a German Expressionist object' (2014) Created and performed by Matthias Sperling A New Walk Museum & Art Gallery commission, undertaken with support from Siobhan Davies Dance and Dance4 Curator: Hugo Worthy Volunteers: Claire Brown, Kirstin Hood, Rhian Comley, Jessica Walker Sound recordist: Martin Clarke Film produced by BigPlus Productions Ltd Performed at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester, UK on October 2, 2014 © Matthias Sperling 2014

As a founding member of the loosely knit group of rebellious artists and painters that emerged from Cologne in the late 1970s called Mülheimer Freiheit, Dokoupil hit the New York art scene and received significant initial recognition. In the twenty years since his last exhibition in the city, he has continued to develop his heterodoxical approach to both painting and its attendant conceptual content. These works represent an investigation into the chemical and physical properties of pigment, emulsions, process and their ability to embody the painters presence. This technique produces images that are at once magical and whimsical, decorative and yet austere, a riff that plays on both a legacy of Dada, and Abstract Expressionism.
