Jonathan Corum, the graphics editor for science at the New York Times, designs print and interactive graphics with a decisive focus on clarity, translating detailed data into something widely understood. Last fall, we hosted a two-day workshop with this true master where we learned more about the fundamentals of information design. In this video, Corum explains how he integrates “art and annotation” to create a unified visual story and tells us how the NYT developed a serious comic to answer the question: “What is the Higgs?” His works are profiled in Gestalten's books, including: - A Life in Illustration http://shop.gestalten.com/life-in-illustration.html - Data Flow 2 http://shop.gestalten.com/data-flow-2-160.html - Visual Storytelling http://shop.gestalten.com/visual-storytelling.html+ More details
In a world of uniformity and globalized styles, only some cultivated gentlemen retain their independence over the way they dress and live. Gestalten's new book "I am Dandy: The Return of the Elegant Gentleman" with photographs by Rose Callahan and texts by Nathaniel "Natty" Adams, was recently launched at the bespoke gentleman's tailor Gieves & Hawkes, No. 1 Savile Row London. The book documents the well-kept lives of 57 protagonists of contemporary dandyism with a keen yet empathic eye. Gestalten.tv flew to Brighton, London, and New York to meet with Natty and Rose, as well as a few of the exquisite modern gentlemen featured in the book, to learn about their styles, attitudes, and philosophies. Together, they help us to explore contemporary dandyism as a rebellious attitude and obsessive calling that can be cultivated on any budget. Watch the video here. Staged in Berlin’s Kupferstichkabinett, the new exhibition “Women, Bulls, Old Masters” is a must-see for anyone who think to know the Spanish master: Pablo Picasso. In the video, contemporary artist Jonas Burgert and curator Anita Beloubek-Hammer have shared their personal views on Picasso with us to celebrate this benchmark release: “There’s one time when every artist looks at Picasso again.” As a visual dialogue about one of the most powerful and fearless pioneers of creative expression, we highly recommend this short film to all artists and non-artists alike. Gestalten is also honored to release the book “Women, Bullfights, Old Masters” to accompany this major exhibition. Ranging from black and white to colorful, the artwork represents his various styles from classic to cubistic to surrealistic. The publication not only examines Picasso’s work in a historical context, but also reevaluates it from a contemporary point of view. Inspired by the Dada movement and simply fed up with the society of North England in 1976, the Liverpool-born artist Linder Sterling—featured in the new Gestalten book The Age of Collage—is known as a true master of collage. For more than three decades, Linder Sterling has addressed identity, sexuality, fashion, and society through her stunning pieces of art, music, and performance without submitting to the Zeitgeist of any given era. The masterful paintings of American artist Dan Witz transform everyday subjects into intimate hyper-realistic depictions of the banalities of life, allowing us to suspend our disbelief long enough to enter the fascinating world of art. Rooted in New York's punk rebellion, culture jamming, and the scary urban blight since the early eighties, this Brooklynite is not only a painter and street artist, but also a musician in the 1980s. His works have been exhibited in galleries throughout Europe and the US. In Gestalten.tv's latest feature, Witz sheds a light on Bar Shrines, Lamps and Other Paintings of Light, his first solo exhibition at Gestalten Space in Berlin, and why he rather likes his spectacular street art to serve a conscious purpose than to merely brand an ego.
