Students talk about the-event-of-which-we-shall-not-speak in their own words. ;-) This series of videos will be included in a blog post at: www.globehackers.com Globe Hackers Multimedia would like to talk with people who are focused on solutions. Please contact us if you have ideas about how to make your community better, or if you have ideas about how to solve problems that your community faces. Share your ideas, find resources that can help you achieve success. Challenges were meant to be overcome. Is democracy really that scary or threatening to the Party Animals in the Forbidden City? One would think they might be more worried about air pollution, managing growth, education, sustainable, hight quality food production, water resources and a host of other challenges. Perhaps they are, but can crowd sourcing really be all that bad? After all, democracy is a kind of crowd sourcing, and what about its utility in keeping representatives honest? How can Democratic Centralism mesh with the territory's unique form of government and history? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_Party_of_China Hong Kong is extremely important to China. That won't change for some time. In the United States of New miracles we use other more subtle means of control: advertising, public relations, marketing and spin to make the national narrative attractive to the Plebeians. Our use of propaganda is legendary. We are, despite our love of violence, a fairly docile nation when it comes to civil action. There are, however, many groups spanning the political spectrum trying to make a difference by encouraging and implementing positive change. Entertainment also remains a very potent mechanism for maintaining the status quo. Give them the Games Nero, give them baths, make them think they are happy. Organized Power can never put too much trust in the people. The people only get in the way of what the powerful want to do. But there is always a danger that if the people in power lose the trust of the people they will spark an even more dangerous response. Sincere dialogue and collaboration is always the way to go when you're dealing with an educated and concerned constituency. If you are interested in understanding more about the system here in China I can recommend a couple of good books: "Underground Front, The Chinese Communist Party in Hong Kong" by Chritina Loh and "Maoanomics" by Loretta Napoleoni, and Stephen Twilley There are many others of course including (love him or hate him) Henry Kissinger's "On China". Wherever you stand in the debate, what happens in China will impact the world.

This was an event for the local baseball team that won a championship in Cuba. We just lucked into this one. I must say the food wasn't bad at all. It was a well produced event, but something was missing. I can't help but feel that isolation has locked Cuba in a past that can't even be really appreciated because of ideology. Can we please improve relations with Cuba?

After getting settled at the Siguanea Bay Marina, we were excited to freshen up at the nearby Colony Hotel where we could take a swim, a shower and have some comfort food after the long passage from Havana to Isla de la Juventud. To our surprise we noticed that the staff was preparing for an event to celebrate a baseball team's championship. Let the party begin!

There are still ghosts permeating this place. It's not supernatural, but a thing of the mind and imagination. The horror of thinking that humanity can be tamed leads to unspeakable nightmares and very real tragedies. One only has to read the human heart, through literature, to understand that the darkness, and the benevolent dreams of organizations and people who were trying to do the right thing, only lead to unfathomable suffering. Only when we understand and live for the true "rights of man" can we mitigate the horrors of best intentions filtered through culture and bias. Can you think of other examples of places like this that exist today? How sad that is so...

Driving from Marina Hemingway to Morro Castle (Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos). The first stop was down the Malecon on Desampardos. It's a huge place with a CADECA with lots of cheap, kitsch, souvenirs and a typical tourist trap. It's a place for a quick in-and-out at best. Morro Castle was built in 1589 when Cuba was Spanish territory. This is a must see if you visit Havana. It's very well taken care of and never too crowded. The views of Havana Bay and the Old Havana are spectacular. On the way to the Castle you can really get a feel for Havana, it's history, culture and style. It's easy to hire drivers to take you around. It's a blast to drive around in a classic car and see the sites. Drivers in Havana are helpful and good company. Enjoy!
