Friday 17 January, 5.30pm Dylan Thomas Theatre, Swansea ‘UTOPIA – AIPOTU’ For the 2014 international celebrations to commemorate Art’s Birthday, Swansea's contribution carried a Utopian theme. Art’s Birthday was dreamt up by Robert Filliou in 1963, and Art's Birthday Wales marked the close of the fiftieth anniversary year with a new prologue to Thomas More’s Utopia. The fictional, conceptual idea of a Utopian space, before and after Thomas More, remains full of potential - a site for celebration, critique, affirmation, subversion - a landscape for hopes, dreams, memories and perhaps nightmares. Using More’s fictional idea of a utopian space, people sent Glynn Vivian Art Gallery their personal thoughts and pictures of their ‘utopia’, their search for a perfect world. These responses were re-imagined into a new work by writer Paul Becker and were presented at the Dylan Thomas Theatre, Swansea. There were also contributions from Black Kettle Collective, Glynn Vivian’s group of young people aged 14-24, and a special appearance from Swansea based troubadour, Joan Jones.
