Microbeads, which can be found in everything from facial scrubs and soap to toothpaste and makeup, show up on ingredient labels under their material names: polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate or polymethyl methacrylate. Scientists have estimated that as many as a half billion plastic microbeads enter the San Francisco Bay alone each day. Microbeads have been found in over 35 samples of wastewater effluent across the United States.Narrated by the Story of Stuff Project’s founder and current Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard, the video uses the trademark Story of Stuff animated style to spotlight the fundamental problem with microbeads: that they’re “designed to go down the drain.”

The Northeast-Midwest Institute/Great Ships Initiative with a support from the Great Lakes Protection Fund has created a new tool to investigate aquatic invasive species. This project will develop new scientific methods to estimate the risk of establishment of aquatic invasive species (AIS). The team will determine how the invasion risks vary with the numbers of invasive organisms released into the environment. This work, ultimately, will lead to fewer successful invasions of the Great Lakes. The project responds directly to a key research need identified by the National Academies of Sciences (NAS), and includes many of the members of that panel on the project team.

              from Liquid Productions, Inc. Added

The Grace Channon was a 3 masted wooden schooner that sailed the Lakes in 1877. She collided with another ship in a storm and sank into the deep waters of Lake Michigan. She's been sitting upright on the bottom for 138 years and in good condition. The water is 185ft deep and due to zebra muscles it's quite clear. One unique feature on this wreck is the intact cabin on the stern. Video by Becky Kagan Schott www.LiquidProductions.com

                from Eric Seals Added

The Paul R. Tregurtha at 1,013 feet long is the largest freighter that sails the Great Lakes. She travels 1,580 miles between Metro Detroit and Superior, Wisconsin on Lake Huron and Lake Superior delivering 68,000 tons of coal to two power plants. The crew of twenty three makes this trip 40 times a year. Along the way they encounter all kinds of weather but they also get to take in the beauty of our Great Lakes. I spent 6 1/2 days on the Tregurtha with my reporting colleague Jim Schaefer of the Detroit Free Press telling the stories of the ship and crew. This is part of their story. http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/2015/07/04/tregurtha-freighter-reliving-memorable-trip/29708695/ Eric Seals/Detroit Free Press
