Thursday at the Dam View Inn, proprietor, Chris Barnard gives a toast to the first keg of Great River Brew ever tapped, the 483 Pale Ale. Great River Brewery occupies the former Living Portraits coffee shop just across Iowa street adjacent to the Dam View Inn. The coffee shop was formerly a muffler shop and now houses all the brewing equipment that was formerly inside the Old Capitol Brew Works in Iowa City. Paul Krutzfeldt, brewer and partner Scott Lehnert have moved the brewing operation from Iowa City to Davenport in the hopes of growing a regional brewing brand and distribution network with Great River Brewery. Old Capitol Brew Works continues to operate on Gilbert Street in Iowa City, while the Dam View Inn is the across the street neighbor in Bucktown where Great River Brewery introduces its newest batches and styles to the public. Every Thursday for six weeks Great River Brewery will be tapping a so called "Golden Keg" and make it available for free to introduce new styles of beer. March 5th was the 483 Pale and upcoming beers include a Red, Farmer Brown and Straight Pipe Stout.
