This video is an edited mashup of my backstory: from the time my parents were children in Egypt to about my mid-twenties. It ends with a sequence from one of my favorite films: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie by Luis Buñuel. My parents were both born in Egypt: my mother in Cairo and my father in Alexandria. They came to America via Israel (my dad) and Italy (my mom) in the early 1960s. They met and married in Chicago. My brother, sister and I were all born in California. In between are snippets from: • "Batman" (my favorite childhood TV show) • a Hasidic 'farbrengen' or celebration, which was typical of my time growing up in orthodox Jewish schools • my love for the work of Pablo Picasso, which prompted: • my move to Mérida, Yucatán, at age 22, to become an artist • and finally my move to a vast, seething, seedy, exciting Mexico City a few years later. What's not in this video is what happened afterward: my travels to Melbourne, Barcelona, New York, Berkeley, Paris, Guadalajara, and back to California. These experiences await their own 'backstory' mashups. I made this 'bio intro' for an MFA Film Production course taught by Martha Coolidge at Chapman University.

A museum guide, a military man, a bank clerk, an aircraft mechanic and other desperate Ukrainian men from all over the country get together once a year in Autumn to work as porters during pilgrimage of Hasidim to the town of Uman'. Within four days, dozens of thousands of Hasidim are flocking together to this tiny town – in a celebrating mood, singing, dancings and… bringing enormous amounts of baggage with them. Throughout these four days local porters sleep not more then three hours a night in handmade tents along the side of the road, while the rest of the time they spend carrying tons of loads to earn their two usual monthly salaries. On their way, they have to reach mutual understanding with their almost "alien" clients and with each other. However, it seems that no burdens can suppress their optimism and humour. Finally, they are sure – "Mister God knows what he's doing".

Why do men dance? What made men dance since early times? Why dance between men? Many theories exist; ritual, religion, celebration, brotherhood, spiritual expression, war preparation, hunting practice or recreation and possibly sheer joie de vivre. Featured are the world renowned tango dancers "Los Hermanos Macana" Though only in their twenties, the Argentine brothers Enrique and Guillermo De Fazio have become a famous dance couple. They are known worldwide for their breathtaking and witty tango interpretations. With their two-man shows they thrill their audiences at venues from the Americas, Europe and Australia.
