      About the speaker: Scott Turn, HNEI Dr. Scott Turn is a Researcher on the faculty of the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute at the University of Hawaii. Over the past 15 years, his research has focused on biomass resources in Hawaii and their utilization. This work has been supported by both the public and private sectors. Recent efforts included heading the team developing the bioenergy master plan for the State of Hawaii. He is currently the UH site director for the Center for Bioenergy Research & Development, part of the National Science Foundation’s Industry/University Cooperative Research Center program Seminar Abstract: This seminar will present an overview of biomass/bioenergy related research including resource assessments, fuel pretreatment, and conversion relevant to Hawaii. Examples from past and current research projects will be presented.

        The University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources and its project partners were awarded a four-year $6 million grant to increase Hawaii’s energy security by creating locally produced renewable energy.The project is examining the use of fast-growing tropical grasses for biofuel production.
