Anti-Semitic attacks against Jewish institutions, shops and individuals in Europe and the US are increasing, aside from in Arab and Muslim countries - and even more so since Israel's Protective Edge Gaza operation against Hamas, the Islamic "Resistance" Movement. Governments and world leaders have expressed dismay over this growing trend with some officials questioning whether the Jewish community even has a future in Europe and other parts of the world. Many attribute the escalating violence against Jewish and Israeli targets, verbal and physical, to the increasing number of Muslims in Europe and the US, and describe it as an opportunity for those who have always been antagonistic to express their anti-Jewish and anti-Zionist positions. Our speakers discussed the causes and effects of modern anti-semitism, and current global efforts to combat Jew-hatred. Professor Robert Wistrich, head of the Hebrew University Sassoon Center for Anti-semitism and the author of "Anti-Semitism - The Longest Hatred" who wrote recently that "extremists on the political far right and far left, along with jihadist immigrants have created a new anti-Semitic climate in Europe." Nadia Ellis, a researcher at the Jewish People Planning Institute with a specialty in European antisemitism and the delegitimization of Israel, who was born and raised in Italy and immigrated to Israel in 2011.
