Honor. It's more than an ideal, it's a way of life, and it inspires everything we do at Hampden-Sydney down to the smallest interaction, like greeting everyone we meet on campus. For more than two and a half centuries, we've lived according to two basic statements that summarize what honorable behavior means to us. "The Hampden-Sydney student will behave as a gentleman at all times and in all places." "The Hampden-Sydney student will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do."

Since its founding in 1839, VMI cadets have been bound by a code of honorable behavior. The cadet-run Honor Court was established as a continuously operating body beginning in 1908. The heart of the VMI honor system is the Honor Code: A cadet does not lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate those who do. The VMI honor system does not recognize degrees of honor. The only sanction for any breech of honor is dismissal.
