The really extraordinary thing about this book is that it tells the story of how one mother embarked on her feverish course of involvement in the AIDS community, in large part to help herself come to terms with the possibility of her son's death. But all that work really doesn't prepare her. She becomes incredibly intimate with a series of strangers, yet she and her son have more and more trouble talking about HIS illness, which is the reason she is doing all this in the first place. She becomes indispensable at the bedsides of countless other people, but when Gary is dying, she still feels helpless, disconnected and as if she'd never set foot in an AIDS hospital room. What is moving about this book is the fact that all this preparation doesn't prepare, because NOTHING can prepare her. “Dying to Tell” is a sound installation that explores death and dying, yet at the same time it also celebrates life. Set up across 6 identical beds, where each bed contains a pillow playing the reflections of older people. Importantly the older people are all coming to the end of life and were in Palliative or residential care at the time of their interview. The installation allows people to engage the artwork in their own way, for some it means standing or sitting on the beds, while for others it means lying on the beds to hear the stories. As they talk, the older people, reveal some of the events, thoughts, things and people that have been important to them throughout life. For me personally it was like spending time with my grandparents, there is something I find incredibly engaging about listening to older people talk about the past and fragments of life. I love the quality of the voices enmeshed with their creaks and groans, as well as the different language they use. The aim of the artwork is to give the viewer the chance to reflect on death and what that has meant to them in the past and what it might mean in the future. The dying to tell installation was created as one part of a project called , “Family - the art of dying and living”, which was primarily a a dance project between the Mature Age Dance Experience and hospice volunteers. While the dance component has now finished the sound installation continues touring as an artwork. This film was made in collaboration with artist and hospice volunteer Sara Wright who provided a number of images for the film and also interviewed hospice volunteer Lucia, while Lucia returned the favour and interviewed Sara. Produced by Troy Melville.
