All in the same boat Participants: Zoe Yakimoff, Tristan Schultz, Sabrina Giacometti, Ruth Montgomery, Petra Perolini, Donald Welch, Manfred Huber, Nic Brand, Anna May, Disa Martin Tutor: Tony Fry Masters of Design Futures Hothouse Date: 12-13 May, 2012 ‘All in the same boat’ was developed as part of a Masters of Design Futures hothouse in May of 2012. Over the weekend we explored what it is that threatens us, why it is not recognised, and why people are not motivated to act. The need to create a certain understanding, leads to the need to communicate in a certain way. The inefficacy of politics as it now stands and its problematic link to the economic was recognised as was the necessity to become political beyond ‘politics’. In light of these issues the question was posed, ‘what do we need to prepare to get to the future?’ This was conceptualised as a journey which recognised the need to identify a certain kind of traveller, ie the need for humans to change ontologically; and a destination, one which is not a Utopia but which presents the possibility for repair, change and a viable future. In response to the issues explored, the metaphor of burning boats was developed as a communication of these issues and as an affirmative message. It is a call to action... They are burning our boats. They are taking away our future. We must learn to survive that which is destroying us We must learn to destroy that which is destroying us: The greed which creates desires and consumes more than can be sustained, creating debt, leading to more waste. Perpetrated by corporations and individuals alike. Driving global destruction. The inequity which is the breeding ground for violence, war and theft. The injustice when those who are down-trodden become open to the theft and plundering of the resources we all rely on. The exploitation, of people, the earth, our resources sucked dry. The pollution, not just just of the physical world, but also of our minds. The lies which are seen in politics and the media, negating our agency and as a result, our existence. The fools who perpetuate this politics without agency. The error that we do not know what we do, we do not understand the consequences. But we have the possibility to transcend that which threatens us, to learn to be another way. To learn to design a world which can sustain us. To learn to design a world which can design us to be other. To create a life boat for ourselves. As we jump from this burning boat we discover a survival kit in the life boat, a survival kit which contains the beginnings of four things. A new politics which offers new freedom in a community of care and recognises that which in our differences we share. A new economy, a new system of exchange in line with the world on which we rely. A new human being who can make the things that make the new world. And then finally, the seeds of the future in the hands of the new designers who turn new politics into new institutions, create with the new humans, who make the new economy. Unity is survival.
