We want to create a mobile phone app documenting the history of Hulme, one of the most redeveloped neighbourhoods in england, which has a rich cultural history and strong community spirit. This video was shot of our initial research work, we spent two weeks in Manchester interviewing people who had strong connections with Hulme and created an initial semi-permanent app, which was shown at Emergency Festival at The Zion Arts Centre (Sept 2014) A big thank you to all residents & exresidents of Hulme who gave their time, words and memories to make this happen

This is a reading from the journal of the Free Photographic Omnibus, February 1974. I was in Hulme, Manchester, when a Granada TV crew, led by Mark O'Neill, turned up to make an item for the tea-time magazine programme Granada Reports. Using colour film for the first time during my journey on the bus, I photographed Mrs I Emare and her family at home in Robert Adam Crescent. It is 20 years ago next week since the murder of black teenager, Stephen Lawrence, who was stabbed to death by a group of white youths as he waited for a bus in Eltham, South East London. The case led to widespread reforms after an inquiry led by Sir William Macpherson concluded that the Metropolitan Police were "institutionally racist". BBC Newsnight examines what has changed in our institutions and society in those 20 years, hearing from young people and community leaders about the state of relations between the police and the public today. Produced and Directed by Nick Blakemore

Beyond the building and beyond the profession, Blurring the Boundaries, the last in the RIBAJ120 Series talks supported by Gerflor, was an energetic evening of discussion. Using Manchester’s Hulme to explore how places could be destroyed or remade RIBA President Stephen Hodder looked first at how its was cleared and replaced with desk access blocks and then how in the 1990s the treasured old patterns of streets and squares were reinstated and a strong design guide turned it into the place it is today.
