"I Love Spring" - A short film shot yesterday...7th April 2010 By: God's Monkey Written / Directed / Staring: Gray Hughes Cinematography / Editing / Guitar: Martyn Randles "I Love Spring" started, as have so many other God's Monkey Productions, with Gray Hughes & myself saying something along the lines of...shall we make a film today?...yer, let's make a film today :) Shot under conditions both Gray & myself like to shoot under...that is to say each scene in one take...letting the story grow as we take a walk on a beautiful day. This version is a work in progress but we decided to upload it anyway. The audio needs to be re-worked a wee bit as gray recorded the voice over in one take at his house while watching the rough cut I emailed to him. Then he emailed me his audio file which I chucked into audacity then played a random guitar chord over. I honestly don't know the name of the chord - I have a photo on the cover of a guitar book of Robert Johnson, curiosity took over and I wondered what he was playing. So I picked up my guitar and put my fingers down like the great dude...then decided it needed to be picked...& I came up with this. I've always wanted to use this chord in a film but, didn't know where it would fit, until today. When Gray said he wanted some music on a particular scene I knew this was the moment to use the chord...keeping with our one take tradition, i recorded it once...so you'll have to forgive my messy playing. Yet again, another outstanding under pressure, off the cuff performance from Mr. Hughes...sir, I tip my hat and salute you...and thank God ('s monkey) I met you. I love your voice over piece too. I can't go into too much detail on shots but, it's obvious we trust each other and have an instinct to grab an opportunity...or go with the flow...one shot in particular happened this way then led me to ask...can you do that again? i want to film it from the other side? Gray's reply was something along the lines of...well I did it the 1st time mart, so I'm pretty sure I can do it again :) Shot on a Canon EOS 500D digital SLR using the 18-55mm kit lens. Edited on an Apple iMac using Final Cut Express 4. Sound mixed & recorded (roughly & quickly) on Audacity. Rendered & compressed as a test to see how it would look at a file size of under 200mb. For those who want to know it ended up as 159.4mb - dimensions 1248 x 702 - codecs AAC, H.264 (& i'm waiting to see what happens to the file size once it's uploaded to vimeo...at this time there's still an hour to go uploading at a steady 29.61KB/s) Uploaded here to make you smile :) With love from God's Monkey x
