I made this documentary with my good friends Leo Katz and Isaac Hoffman for National History Day in 2010. It won 1st place in Ohio and placed amongst the top 11 documentaries nationally. The theme of the competition was Innovation in History. As the 1st ballistic missile, the V2 led to the creation of ICBMs, but more importantly, it is the ancestor of all modern space rocketry, the bridge between mankind and the universe.

THERE ARE TWO AND A HALF WAYS TO SAVE THE EARTH; TWO OF THEM ARE ON THE MOON. Earth Scientists, Space Scientists, Futurists and Visionaries confront the major challenges facing us as a species and threatening our home planet. How will we feed, house and employ ten billion humans by the year 2050? What happens when the oil runs out? The dangers of nuclear power and nuclear waste. Our effect on the environment, the health of the planet and our fellow creatures. By 2050 we will need three times as much power and it will have to be three times as clean. There is no technology now on line, or capable of coming on line by the year 2050, that can solve our energy problem. In the next hundred years, there’s a one chance in four hundred and fifty-five of a species-ending cosmic event. But don’t worry. We’ve developed Space Technology. We’ve developed a way to turn a cosmic threat into an asset. When we learn what we need to colonize the moon, we will be able to use that knowledge to protect ourselves and our home planet. GAIA SELENE offers clear and do-able solutions to the crises facing us. Space Solar Power; clean and renewable, it could replace polluting fossil fuel plants. Lunar Solar Power; collectors crafted from lunar material could microwave power back to earth. Power from Moon Dust; Forty tons of 3Helium in Fusion Reactors could power the U. S for a year, and would be worth 320 Billion Dollars. We can and will do it. We have already spent a trillion dollars on space technology. Now it is time to build on what we started forty years ago. It’s not rocket science anymore. We don’t need to invent anything new. We can colonize the moon with current technology. In doing so, we can save the earth. How will we live and work on the moon? What it will be like to fly on wings in the one-sixth lunar gravity? Why we will live in lavatubes under the surface. How we can travel a thousand miles an hour in maglev bullet trains. Why the Moon is a stepping stone to the Solar System, to nearby Stars, to the Future. Emmy Award Winning Documentary Producer/Director Charles Proser presents Gaia Selene, a new documentary on the exciting New Frontier and the future of “Homo Spaciens”. “The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth”. “The Rest....is Ours!”

6/6/14: Last Friday members of the 556th Strategic Missile Squadron held a reunion at missile silo site 5 in Lewis, NY. Owner Alexander Michael is an Australian architect who goes by the moniker of "Silo Boy" and he welcomed the veterans with a BBQ and self-guided tours of the renovated underground complex. The 556ers gathered from across the country this weekend to attend the grand opening of the Plattsburgh Air Force Base Museum. Between 1962-1965, there were 12 United States Air Force Atlas F ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) silos scattered in a protective circle around the Plattsburgh Air Force Base - 10 in NY and 2 in VT. This was the Cold War era and the U.S. was desperate to bridge the perceived "missile gap" with the USSR. With a price tag of 15-18 million per silo, they built these nuclear missile sites to withstand an atomic blast and staffed their LCCs (Launch Control Centers) with the 556th SMS. And less than 2.5 years later, the elaborate complexes were decommissioned, abandoned and eventually sold to private individuals. Eva meets the vets who once worked long hours in these missile silos, learns some Cold War history and gets a tour of this unique site. The first of a three part series exploring international award winning art photographer Justin Barton's three year project to describe the psychological war surrounding nuclear weapons. Given rare access to photograph actual nuclear weapons systems used by Russia and in contrast those used by the USA during the Cold War he lets the objects tell their story through the traces of their use and the details left behind by the engineers and missile combat crews. These minutiae provide cause for reflection, whether you believe in the need for deterrent or disarmament, as a stark reminder of the tangible reality of these weapons of unimaginable destruction. In a world where our civilization is dependent on a subtle ever changing balance of nuclear powers it behoves us all to examine the nature of these artifacts carefully and remember that our very existence is dependent on the turn of a key and the press of a button.
