PSU IGERT Poster Intro: Water, Health, and Economy: an Integrated Ecosystem Services Approach to Sustainable Development in Urbanizing Deltas Poster Abstract:In late August 2011 an international group of 25 interdisciplinary graduate students was assembled to create an integrated framework approach for sustainable development and planning in urbanizing delta regions throughout the world. This integrated framework project is being accomplished in 3 major steps: 1) Reviewing sustainable development approaches to “wicked” problems (i.e. those with complex interdependencies), 2) Integration of team knowledge and different sustainable development frameworks to create one cohesive approach, and 3) Application of this generic sustainable development approach to a case study delta in Indonesia. To initiate the process students gathered for a week-long summer workshop at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, where they were exposed to a range of water-related sustainable development issues. After the workshop, students continued to collaborate through the integration process via teleconferences, email, and web-based discussion board. In early April 2012 the international team gathered for a second week-long workshop at PSU in Portland, Oregon to finish the integration process. This process produced a generic sustainability framework document focused on illuminating and addressing the “wicked” problems and sustainable development issues faced in growing delta regions. This integrated approach focused on using the Ecosystem Services (ES) framework as operational language within the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD). Within the strong group decision making, process based FSSD approach the ES concept can be used for evaluating and discussing tradeoffs as well as for demonstrating the potential benefits of a sustainable development projects that preserve ecosystems and the services they provide. Health issues, and especially waterborne diseases, play a large role in reducing human wellbeing urban delta regions. Human health issues are closely interwoven with other wicked problems, and diseases are often caused or spread as a result of other processes. To create sustainable development in urban delta regions, measures must be taken to protect sensitive ecosystems from urban pressures. This integrated approach will be taken in October 2012 on the ground in Indonesia with the cooperation of students and stakeholders to create a sustainable plan for reducing waterborne disease outbreaks in the Citarum Delta. Comparative Tumor Models: Use for Assessing Novel Drug Strategies Dr. Timothy Fan, Associate Professor of Veterinary Clinical Medicine Thursday, November 29, 2011 1000 MNTL, 12:00 - 1:00 PM Abstract: Basic science in nanomedicine has rapidly advanced over the past decade, and has generated fundamentally important discoveries. However, clinical translation of nanomedicine remains in its infancy, and the development of nanotechnology platforms as novel drug delivery strategies for the treatment of cancer in people has not been fully explored. Comparative oncology is the study of shared commonalities in tumor biology among different species. In addition to human beings, the only other large mammal that develops spontaneous cancers with any frequency is the dog. Through the use of pet dogs with spontaneously-arising cancers, it is feasible to evaluate the safety and anticancer activities of nanoparticle drug delivery strategies. This seminar will highlight the use of canine tumor xenograft models, as well as, dogs with spontaneously-arising tumors for the testing and validation of targeted nanoparticle drug delivery strategies. Based upon these preclinical and clinical investigations, scientific findings provide foundational support to advance the use of targeted nanoconjugates for the management of common tumors in people.

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
