DKS! met up with Ian Ruhter in South Lake Tahoe, CA. and went to the Silver & Light headquarters to discuss a few things with this on the rise wet-plate photographer that has turned his life's dream in to a reality. Ian discusses his developing in a small mountain town & his venture to Los Angeles California to pursue a commercial photography career. Growing tired of being told what to shoot, commercial photography eventually ended up being the reason that he quit his jobs in L.A to move back to Lake Tahoe to invent a totally new way to shoot life size wet-plates with his "Camera Truck". Stay tuned for his upcoming Silver & Light Art Show to be premiered at the Fahey Klein Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. on October 16th 2014. http://dks.tv/ https://vimeo.com/ianruhter Produced & Directed by: Ian Beaudoux Music by: Swimming

My greatest failure in life came when I lost the ability to believe in my own dreams. It had taken a year and a half to return to Yosemite after enduring one of my most heartbreaking experiences. In an unexpected twist of fate I regained the courage to try again after seeing the world through a child’s eyes. Since the release of the Silver & Light film we have accomplished more than we ever thought possible. We could have never made it this far without the support of people like you. Ian Ruhter was a successful snowboard photographer, until he realized photography was becoming just a job, instead of a life. He put all his savings into building a camera of his own – out of a delivery truck. We caught up with him on the road near Lake Tahoe…

In the process of preparing the time machine, I had no idea this would become one of the most extraordinary journeys to date. It would propel me into the future where I meet Chase Jarvis, one of the greatest photographers of all time. It would then send me back in time to meet with my old friend, Peter Line, the best snowboarder of this era. All of a sudden I found myself in the present, making a picture of Ishmael Butler from the Diggable Planets. I had travelled the way you would in a dream, taking me backward into the future. A future where you paint with silver and light. The theme for the Apri 5, 2013 was 'The Future' featuring notable photographer and alchemist Ian Ruhter. The event was made possible through the support of our presenting partner Pencilneck Software and ongoing support of GDC/BC, Dodson House, Province of BC, and tech partner Fusion Cine. When for him the craft of photography evolved into something less personal and true, even vapid and uninspiring, he sought a new way to approach his craft, and he found his future in the past. By using a very old approach to photography, he now exploring stories, people and places though the lens of the world’s largest portable camera and records life using a wet plate process from the 1850's. His project Silver and Light was a risky exploration of inspiration, passion and creative process, and his video has become an Internet sensation. The project tells many stories both in print (metal plates) and the videos that offer compelling insight into peoples’ lives, fears and success. Ian reflected on his upbringing, challenges as a child, successes and failures as a photographer and how, by losing his way and journeying back to the mid-nineteenth century where one paints with silver and light, and how this revelation in which he embraced the past while utilizing the technological advances of the future allowed him to find the component—and creative fulfillment—he was searching for. A few notable comments (paraphrased) by Ian: "If everything happens for a reason, maybe the future is already written. Do I have control of my destiny or is it fate?" "Photography gave me a voice and that was the missing link I had been looking for my whole life." "The ability to dream is what makes things possible. I work in the space of my dreams and thoughts." "Dyslexia is my greatest gift. That's what led me to the gift of photography." "I could make my own film. If I learned how to make it no one could take that away from me." "When the first plate worked, we were like, whoa, now what? It would’ve so much easier if it had failed." On the DTES: "Every city you go to has the same kinds of problems. Being in places like this inspires me." Our May 3, 2013 event theme will be “Backwards” featuring former mayor of West Vancouver, Pamela Goldsmith-Jones and presenting support partner R&M lamination. Death Do Us Part is the fear of letting go of our past in order to reach for the future. When we take this leap of faith we decide to let go of our fears. We begin free falling with nothing to hold on to. These are the rare instances that we are actually living in the moment. Your support is the driving force behind our project. We could not have done this without you. We have made it this far because you shared and supported us through our social networking sites. We were able to connect with the people in this film because of the internet. Every time you share or like this project it brings us one step closer to photographing your town, people you know, possibly even you. The American Dream video is based on the fear of success, this thought is extremely powerful, fear has the ability to cripple us from pursuing our dreams. The moment I embraced my dreams it was as if the universe had drawn people to help us and share their stories. Our goal is to tell the stories of the people who live in America. Your support is the driving force behind our project. We could not have done this without you. We have made it this far because you shared and supported us through our social networking sites. Most would say it is a miracle that Madison is with us today. I decided to use bubbles because they are so delicate and fragile. They blow carelessly in the wind. The way a child does. These are the types of stories that we are searching for. Become a part of SILVER & LIGHT and get updated travel info. We will be coming to a town near you!!!!! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ian-Ruhter-Photography/159583283699?ref=hl http://ianruhter.tumblr.com/ twitter.com/#!/silverandlight The Time Machine was created based upon the idea that I would be able to capture images the way I see them in my mind. When I close my eyes and dream, I see images in 3-D. I am able to move freely within this space and view the images from all angles. This camera works in the same way. Because I am able to stand inside the camera, the image surrounds me. I am now able to consciously see images from all angles.
