        • DEI 101: Why Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)?

from Regional Diversity Roundtable Added 10 0 0

Diversity, equity and inclusion have become buzzwords that have been placed strategically in organizational mandates, inspired the formation of DEI committees and/or simply sparked critical dialogue around organizational culture. In the process, these buzzwords have also cultivated multiple understandings and approaches to practice within sectors. Hosted by the Regional Diversity Roundtable, this introductory webinar is the first of three sessions intended for individuals in all sectors and industries. It can function as an introduction, refresher, or an approach to an organizational DEI issue. During this session we will explore the following questions: What does DEI mean? How does Diversity and Inclusion as an equity approach differ or is similar to other approaches? Does the DEI approach have value for organizations? Our guest expert Julie Pehar from Equity Vision will speak to how organizations can take their current DEI pulse with tangible strategies. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of DEI as well as resource materials that will aid in the implementation of the strategies the webinar speaks to.

            from Richard Cohen Added 20 0 0

GOING TO SCHOOL (IR A LA ESCUELA) brings us into the lives of teenagers with disabilities in a Los Angeles middle school. The cinema verite style bilingual documentary is described as "poignant" "must see" "uplifting" "eye-opening" "important" and "highly recommended". Scenes shot in special education and inclusive classrooms show the determination of young students to learn. A boy with intellectual disability fits right into a regular class with assistance of a sign language interpreter. His curiosity flourishes when he is given a chance to look through a microscope. A girl teaches another to solve a math problem. She explains, "Math is important for whatever job you get in life." These scenes are filmed against a historic campaign by parents and teachers to protect the Human Rights of children with disabilities in public schools. In a trailer, outside the school district headquarters, a mother tearfully seeks help from a parent advocate. Together they prepare for an IEP (Individualized Education Program) session for her daughter. The guidance one mother receives from another fills her with confidence and a smile. In another scene, the Superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District meets with mothers of children with disabilities to discuss inclusion, integration, discrimination and what he can and cannot accomplish. GOING TO SCHOOL (IR A LA ESCUELA) is a story for the entire educational community. The film captivates and informs families, policy makers, and students and teachers at all academic levels. • Webinar | Inclusion 2.0—What’s in Your Toolbox?

                  from DonJohnstonInc Added 18 0 0

Inclusion 1.0 gave students with IEPs physical access to the same education as their peers. But too often the support wasn’t there to make them successful in these settings. Inclusion 2.0 changes this. Instead of stopping at physical inclusion, it focuses on helping students succeed in their classrooms. There are three main shifts from Inclusion 1.0 to Inclusion 2.0: 1) Students must fail before getting support —> Needs are identified with data before students fail 2) Reliance on staff for support —> Personalized accommodations help students become independent 3) Progress tracking is used for compliance and reporting —> Data is used to inform instruction and prove outcomes In this webinar, Ben and Trish will show you how Don Johnston’s tools are designed to help you achieve Inclusion 2.0. First, needs are identified proactively with uPAR. Then personalized accommodations including Co:Writer and Snap&Read give students fluid access to the curriculum across devices. Finally, data from these tools proves outcomes and gives feedback. To learn more about uPAR, Snap&Read and Co:Writer, please visit http://donjohnston.com
