Every day is filled with new discoveries for little Layla Jones. “She’s 18 months old. She’s active, loves to run around, loves to play outside,” says her mom Mandi Jones. As a first-timer, she is also undergoing new experiences. “I thought right away that it was diaper rash and it was.” A red, shiny rash, mildly irritating, mostly harmless. “It’s a very common problem. In fact, it’s so common that about one in four children actually see a pediatrician,” says Dr. Anthony Pietroniro, a pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System. Almost every little one gets it - but why? We’ve uncovered the top causes of diaper rash. Beginning with its peak period, between 8 and 15 months - when urine and waste in diapers becomes more acidic. “Children are often experimenting with new solid foods. Their parents are starting to feed them solid foods and sometimes these solid foods alter the digestion a little bit,” says Dr. Pietroniro. A key factor in diaper rash is moisture, whether it's a diaper that's wet from being soiled, or one that's wet from being in a pool. “Anytime the skin is wet or exposed to any kind of moisture that can become potentially irritating. So taking your baby to a pool, taking your baby to the beach, all potentially can result in a diaper rash.” Jones agrees, “Definitely. Because when we’ve been swimming or been at the beach all day then she most definitely will have a little diaper rash the next day.” Other causes include allergies to diapers or wipes, as well as the child being on antibiotics. “This is also true for babies who are being breastfed by mothers who are on antibiotics,” says Dr. Pietroniro. Zinc oxide or petroleum jelly provides the skin a protective barrier. But the best treatment for diaper rash may be to give the bottom a rest at nap-time. “Lay the baby on a towel and take the diaper off.” The inflammation should clear up within a few days. “It’s something that I take in stride and expect that all kids go through,” says Jones View More Health Matters video segments at leememorial.org/healthmatters/ Lee Memorial Health System in Fort Myers, FL is the largest network of medical care facilities in Southwest Florida and is highly respected for its expertise, innovation and quality of care.
