A slideshow of photos of various sculptures by the main roads around Ireland. All of these sculptures (apart from the one of the virgin mary, which isn't a vision, I just was moving the camera too much) were added to the roads when they were built as part of the irish road sculpture scheme. This scheme allowed a certain amount of the money that was put to making new roads to go to sculptures to be put by them. Sounds good, eh? England could do with something like that. Hows about it, Dave and Nick? Sorry about the bad accuracy of the roads (I will be uploading a correct list of the roads later), and the sculpture names. I'll try my best to find what they are called etc, but in the meantime I'm afraid you're going to have to live with vague descriptions. I do know, however, that the last one in the slideshow is called 'The Linen Stream'. I'm sure you can see why! ------------------------------- UPDATE: The correct roads are, in order of appearance: N21, N59, N5, R311/R310. I think that's the right ones now!

When i was 18 my sister played an album over and over and over again, you know the type.... Jasus non stop kinda thing. Well the good thing was it replaced Bowie, Amazing as he is after 2 weeks with a sister playing spiders from mars non stop in the room next door, the homely environment takes on a Japanese prisoner of war camp feel. So it was a new Irish Band from Newry (northern Ireland but we didn't seem to mind) called "the 4 of us" Apparently the lead singer was dreamy.... Thank you sister. The name of the album was "songs for the tempted" and pretty much that was that. A week later we were watching them on MTV, taping top of the pops on the off chance they appeared. The the news came through "the 4 of us" were coming to Cork. So of course dragged was I by my big sister.... Cork City hall, Packed, screaming girls everywhere, lousy acoustics and dodgy dancing. Every single released since then i own, every album points out a moment in time in my life that i only reserve for films, Ah yes fight club... 1999 new house, new job first camera... that kinda thing. So i bumped into them a few times around cultural Dublin, just in passing mind, met Brendan (the lead singer) walking around grafton street, I said something like "Jesus love the new album" and he just stopped and had a 10 minute conversation, asked me what i did, wasn't expecting that... Met Declan when i was a manager in a restaurant and his wife had been in for dinner, he came to collect her so i asked him did he want a drink or anything... minor meetins im sure that would even register nevermind leave a lasting impression. Then they played in Vicar street. i was actually working in the worst hotel of my life, I wont mention it as advertising Juries Inn christchurch would be so embarrassing... Opps too late, So sue me. They had obviously lost thier way and stumbled into this Hellish spot for a quick coffee and a quick go through of the set list. I walked past the table and had to do a double take... weird seeing a band from your youth sitting in the corner of irelands worst hotel. (Ah ok thats a bit harsh ... one of Irelands) So i got them coffee and then Declan asked if i wanted to go see the gig. I gibbered, He put my name down on the door and i get free entry. Seat reserved for 4 up at the front of the stage. (Now i hasten to add they didnt remember me or have a clue who i was, topped up by the fact they had just released the most amazing album of their career "heaven & Earth" and the kicker, My sister had just been in America working on a script for her feature and told me they took some time off and drove route 66 in a convertible with the 4 of us blaring top down and drinkin' coca cola....... Envy was not the word.) Went to gig in work clothes hadn't time to change. Was awesome. Sister jealous! So you get the idea. I'm a fan. About a year ago, After id started filming i saw the two brothers were coming to Cork to play an acoustic set (just the 2 of us) I sent them an email to their website and got a reply from Declan wondering why the hell was i offering to film them? But time went on and sure 'nuff, the two lads played on a soaked flooded cork city night, Terrible turnout half of Corks business were destroyed. about 150 people Brendan & Declan Murphy and In the middle me and my canon Xl2. That was last year, this year they came back again full packed venue, and they kicked ass. This was one of the songs from second night, Before the gig I had asked Declan if they were going to play Blackbird as id never heard them doing it live but had heard a dodgy mp3 on some website of them do it. Im not even a Beatles fan i just loved this track and hey presto whaddya know, Ive had the pleasure of filming them several times now, and I'm currently up to my eyes editing raw footage from their last European tour. You'll find all the links to the videos on their facebook pages and Official website. I havent slept in two days, Goddam i love this video Lark..... Maurice. Artist: Xavi Muñoz Video: Lorraine Gallard This I have wished to write to you (1589-2005) On may 2005, Site-ations, sense in place, was the opportunity to find one local story that happened in Sligo in 1588 that relates directly with Spanish History facts, which is were the artist is from. The project explores the lack of communication, building a parallel story between 1589 letter written by Franscisco de Cuellar, sharing his eventful survival trail after the castaway oh the Spanish Armada, with 2005, father and son relationship, redoing such trail through Ireland in a search to overcome the gap in between them. The structure is a video-installation developed on two bases: the bottle, as a symbol of hope, that the message reaches it’s destiny; and the video, which is how the “survival trail” is reinterpreted. The goal of this project is to express the artists and public most inner thoughts through revealing it’s secrets to someone that is destined to receive it, including ourselves, through putting these thoughts into an empty bottle. During the exhibition in Sligo-Ireland, over 500 thoughts were expressed. And such bottles containing these messages will be thrown on the 25th of September, 2006, which is the anniversary of the shipwrecks on Streedagh Stand, at the sea in Lisbon-Portugal, which is where the Spanish Armada ships have departured from. This project is dedicated to my father. ...................................................... The Spanish Armada in Sligo, Ireland. In May 1588, the Spanish Armada, the largest invasion fleet ever, set sail from Lisbon in Portugal. Its purpose was to enforce a claim of Philip II of Spain to the English throne and to restore the Catholic faith to Protestant England. Under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia, the Armada comprised 130 vessels of varying size, type and nationality, roughly 29,450 men and 2,250 guns of all kinds. It was supposed to rendezvous with land troops led by the Duke of Parma and proceed to invade England. Storms and English frigates scattered the unwieldy Armada and many of the ships were damaged or sunk in sea-battles. The Irish coastline claimed many vessels and even those crewmen that reached land were not guaranteed safety or continued life. Francisco de Cuellar was a captain of the galleon San Pedro of the squadron of Castille, one of the front line squadrons of the Spanish Armada. Following the battles with the English fleet in the Channel, de Cuellar was accused and convicted of breaking fleet sailing orders. Condemned to death, he argued his case sufficiently well, to obtain a reprieve. Conditional to that reprieve was that he remain on board the Levanter La Lavia under the supervision of the Judge Advocate, Martin de Aranda. This then was how he came to be aboard La Lavia, when she in company with La Juliana and Santa Maria de Vision also from the squadron of Levant, became trapped off the Sligo coast at Streedagh. These three ships remained stormbound here for four days, on the fifth day the weather worsened, as the storm increased, all three were driven ashore foundering on Streedagh Strand. Francisco de Cuellar survived this disaster and set out to reach safety, first here in Ireland, travelling from Sligo to the Causeway Coast, from there to Scotland, and from Scotland to Spanish held Antwerp. From Antwerp he wrote a long letter detailing his adventures in Connaught and Ulster, that led to his subsequent escape. (Text provided by davidjohnewart.com/spanisharmada) © Celtic Fringe Fest 2011
