More often they seem to come from when I am most awake. – Geoff McFetridge Ivory & Black Soho proudly presents “Around Us & Between Us”, the first solo exhibition in London since 2005 by the Los Angeles based artist Geoff McFetridge – A multidisciplinary artist without creative boundaries who’s life work ranges from poetry to installation, painting to graphic design and many other practices in between. For his “Around Us & Between Us” exhibition, Geoff has created a series of 10 new acrylic paintings on canvas on his distinctive and reductive style, giving each different subject the same treatment and refinery. In the artist’s own words: Images are central to my painting. The images are varied, while my treatment of them is very consistent. The imagery is refined to a point of anonymous functionality. The paintings are meant to feel as if they were pulled directly from the lexicon.I paint some things because they are things that I have seen, but more importantly, I believe they are things that the viewer has seen. I am painting from life, but not life purely found in the landscape, but the also psychological, mediated, and transcendental world that infects our consciousness. Of a fish Ive never heard That wouldn’t rather be a bird To leave the water for the skies And over seas and lakes it flies - Geoff McFetridge _ Geoff McFetridge is an artist based in Los Angeles California. • WILD :: Kenya's Elephants and The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

          03:39

          from Village Beat Added 71.3K 255 18

At the current rate of Elephants being slaughtered for their tusks to make 'Ivory'- it is forecasted that we could see the end of wild elephants across Africa in less than a decade. WILD is a film about the life of Elephants behind the Ivory Trade and Poaching Crisis in Kenya. What is happening to these keepers of the earth, what happens to the earth when there are no more keepers, and what is being done to protect the lives of these magical sentient beings. We hear from Julius- an elephant keeper at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust orphan's nursery in Nairobi, Nick Trent- DSWT's pilot working together with The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in Kenya's massive Tsavo National Park and the many elephants that have taken refuge at the DSWT as they physically and emotionally rehabilitate to return to the wild where the land has become a battlefield between man and nature. The time to act is now - and there is so much we can do. Begin by getting involved here: iWorry.org. A campaign of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) iWorry is organizing marches around the world to urge world leaders to stop poaching, stop the trade and stop the demand. It is time for a COMPLETE BAN on the international and domestic trade in ivory. It is time to invest more resources into wildlife protection at a field level, to strengthen penalties for those involved in the ivory trade, to heighten security at ports and borders and to invest in educational efforts to stop the demand for ivory. You can help too by donating online to support the orphans rehabilitation process and the anti-poaching efforts of DSWT. This is the beginning of restoring our connection to our home- the earth- and maintaining a safe wilderness for elephants to survive. WILD Directed by Village Beat Produced by RYOT Music: Cliff Martinez, "I Drive" (from the original motion picture soundtrack of Drive). Darkside, "Heart" (from Psychic, released Oct. 8, 2013).

Ivory & Black Soho proudly presents “Heritage”, a new exhibition by Pedro Matos, which embodies the artist’s much anticipated first solo exhibition in London. “Heritage” features a new series of oil paintings on canvas and one site-specific installation. Pedro Matos’ paintings feature a rich and complex layering consisting of different languages of painting, which combine texture, patterns, realistic figurative painting and text. Through this visual language, his work draws the viewer into a dialog surrounding the impermanence of social and cultural values. In the artist’s own words ” Through this exhibition I am trying to question my personal and cultural heritage, and how these values and conditions evolve and change over time in our society..”. Inspired by the french philosopher Michel Foucault’s work, subject to his paintings and explorations are the themes/concepts of Knowledge, Power, History, Sexuality, Discourse, Episteme and Impermanence. The exhibition will also comprise the release of a limited edition artist’s book of Pedro Matos’ work and life. Pedro Matos is an Artist and Curator born in Santarém, Portugal in 1989. Influenced by the sub-cultures of Graffiti and Skateboarding he was immersed in, Pedro started painting at the age of 16 in Lisbon where he attended studies at both the Faculty of Fine Art – University of Lisbon, Ar.Co Art Centre , and later decided not to complete his academic education. After completing a painting course at Central Saint Martins, Pedro went on to pursue his career in London, where he currently lives and works. His work has been exhibited at numerous galleries and museums across the world, such as the University of Arizona’s Museum of Modern Art, Philips de Pury in London, White Walls gallery in San Francisco and Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. Pedro Matos also works as a curator and was responsible for shows in Lisbon, London, Atlanta and Miami, having also recently co-founded Ivory&Black Soho in London. Just outside Denver, a government facility stores more than a million products of the illegal wildlife trade, from tigers and bears to elephant ivory. These items are confiscated at points of entry around the United States, and sent to the National Wildlife Property Repository to be destroyed or used for educational purposes. The Repository is a revealing window into the growing global industry of wildlife and plant trafficking, which has been estimated at up to $23 billion. The facility also houses the National Eagle Repository, which receives and distributes deceased bald and golden eagles to Native Americans around the United States, who use them for religious purposes.
