"Dream Navel', created and performed by Julie Fotheringham for Movement Research Open Performance. Video by Chris Carlone. Music by Jarryd Lowder and Beethoven. December 16, 2014. The title derives from the following passage in Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams: "There is often a passage in even the the most thoroughly interpreted dream which has to be left obscure; this is because we become aware during the work of interpretation that at that point there is a tangle of dream-thoughts which cannot be unraveled and which moreover adds nothing to our knowledge of the content of the dream. This is the dream's navel, the spot where it reaches down into the unknown."

'III' was created for Movement Research at Judson Church in NYC on March 29, 2010. This piece comprises three sections hinting at the issues of voyeurism, manipulation, and death, all distanced from their fleshy, human realness through the mediation of technology. A small surveillance camera attached to the back of each TV monitor provides the live feed for the screen. The sound comes from a mic strapped to Jarryd's throat picking up his pulse and vocal noises and is supplemented by my prerecorded vocals manipulated by Jarryd via micro-cassette. Created and performed by myself (Julie Fotheringham) and Jarryd Lowder.

'Heel²' was created for the opening performance at The Rover Soho in NYC on May 30, 2010. Tangentially related to our piece 'Heel', this performance comments on the fetish-izing of stilettos. My awkward movement exaggerates and exposes the precariousness of wearing heels, while at the same time the spacial relationship between Jarryd and myself places him in the subordinate position "licking my shoe". The wooden board on which I stand is mic'd so that my movement initiates the sound which is processed through a function generator. A small surveillance camera on each side of my shoes provides the live feed for the TV screens. An additional camera is switched into the feed for the "licking". Created and performed by me (Julie Fotheringham) and Jarryd Lowder.

'Self Improvement' is a piece created for Women in Motion, part of the Estrogenious Festival in NYC, on Nov. 5, 2011. This darkly comedic performance comments on our socially constructed image of beauty and the extent to which women go to try to conform to this unrealistic standard. 'Self Improvement' intends to be a critical view, exposing the absurdity and pathos in the surgical manipulation of our bodies in the quest for this artificial ideal. Original music and sound manipulation design by Jarryd Lowder. Concept, creation, and performance by Julie Fotheringham.

Collaborating doesn't get much more enjoyable than this. Filmed at a secret beach in Brooklyn called Dead Horse Bay, this beach which used to be an island was the primary trash processing facility in the NY metro area as far back as the 1850s.
