              • Vanley Burke and Sampad 'My Route' Exhibition, Birmingham U.K., Stratford Road, 2015

                from Andy Green Added

This brief film was created to give a very rough snapshot of an exhibition of photographs taken by Vanley Burke, for a project called 'My Route' organised by Sampad in Birmingham. Sampad's website gives the following background: 'My Route aims to capture, share and preserve the vibrant and culturally rich heritage that exists between Sparkbrook and Hall Green along Stratford Rd (and surrounding areas). Over the last 60 years this road has welcomed many new residents from across the globe, whose lives and experiences have created a diverse and colourful tale that deserves to be acknowledged.' Alongside the iconic images by Vanley, the visual sites also featured wonderful oral history testimony. Oral historians are always concerned with how their recordings can be made accessible to a broader audience; this weaving together of image and voice in a working public space was a powerful example of how to draw attention to the human context of diaspora, and to celebrate all those who who have lived and worked in Birmingham. The oral history extract included on the film is that of Jossett Lynch, who arrived from Jamaica in the 1960's, and became a local school teacher. Note on film: this film was made on a stormy, rain-lashed day on Stratford road in peak-time traffic. Many thanks to the Baptist minister Paul Walker for taking me to see the exhibition.
