Andreas Lantides is the son and heir of visionary Greek Vigneron Panos Lantides of Lantides Estates fame. During the Spring Andreas was in Toronto to promote his wines at an intimate tasting for a few choice Sommeliers at (the late) Toca in the Ritz Carlton hotel. After a run through the range of his wines we retired to the relative serenity of the restaurant’s wine cellar to discuss his family estate and wines as well as the impact of the financial crisis upon the Greek wine industry. One of Andreas’ wines are currently available in Ontario at the LCBO, and I am led to believe that there is still some in the system. Seek it out!

We really do go out of our way to track down the most dynamic and camera friendly souls who will hopefully both entertain and educate our viewers. Over the years we have introduced you to the bubbling charismas, extrovert personalities, and mindblowing intellects of many an interview subject. We wholly believe in the democratization of wine and gastronomy, moving forward to a future where stuffiness and pretension have no place. This week we introduce Mr. Adolfo Folonari from the well known and distributed Tuscan house/brand of Ruffino.

On a hot Toronto summer afternoon we took over a picnic table in Trinity Bellwoods park once again for one of our guerrilla tastings/interviews. One day Toronto’s Finest are going to bust us for hosting these, but that certainly didn’t happen upon this glorious day. We were tasting the wines of Le Vieux Pin and La Stella from BC’s Okanagan region with the passionate and informed Rasoul Salehi… and his passion is infectious. Tasting alongside Rasoul reminds me of why I got into this line of work many years ago, as he is a gentleman who truly believes in the quality and integrity of the wines he represents. Oh… and the wines were rather smashing. Here’s to more park interviews like this!

It has to be said that the “lowly” Gamay really does get a bit of a bum deal… the shiny end of the stick. In my travels throughout the vineyards of Beaujolais I discovered that it was capable of some truly remarkable things, so why is it viewed as the extremely poor relation of Pinot Noir? Why is Gamay almost always seen as being the whipping boy of Burgundy? Why is it viewed by so many as being a lesser varietal? sniffed at with derision by so-called aficionados? Why is it so difficult to convince the wine-buying public to pay more than $29 retail for a bottle of the stuff? (and, to be quite frank, even that would be seriously pushing it) We spoke with two trés jolie Beaujolais Winemakers, Lydie Nesme of Château de Pierreux and Francois Jaubert of Mommessin, about what makes Gamay so great in their eyes and palates, and here’s what they had to say… Good Food Revolution’s Jamie Drummond continues his journey in Beaujolais, France.
