One of a trio of never-filmed effects models that I created for an unrealized 16mm project in the summer of 1989. This particular model was scratch-built from balsa, bass wood, and sheets of styrene plastic. Its motor was assembled utilizing several random plastic shapes carved and configured into a believable engine, then equipped with a smattering of conduit comprised of medium-gauge electrical wire. Although, the Dart ship's design appears outwardly simplistic, it was a challenging build, and, despite its limited scale (or because of it), required a full two weeks of painstaking effort. Its design was no doubt inspired by Ralph McQuarrie's amazing pre-production artwork for films like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Buck Rogers. Except for a single photo taken of the miniature trio by the local newspaper in 1991, the models were never photographed and have remained sequestered in an all-but-inaccessible drawer for the past 22 years. Unearthing the models for the first time in decades, I was surprised to find that they were much more intricate than I remembered. And, despite the passage of time, have dated perhaps less so than a number of likewise craft that have since paraded themselves across the cinematic galaxy. I'd like to think so, anyway...
