In an image-saturated world, British collage artist John Stezaker rather creates more with less. Cutting up yesterday photographs, subtracting pieces, and juxtaposing faces, he transforms forgotten photographs and postcards into symbolic portraiture of modernism. Stezaker’s artistic interests in examining hidden relations between images have bestowed international success and recognition upon him and his collage art. Gestalten.tv had a precious opportunity to speak with the artist at his exhibition in Berlin’s Capitain Petzel Gallery. Featured in the exhibition The Age of Collage, his topical work is now on display at Gestalten Space in Berlin until January 12, 2014. The accompanying book of the same title also takes an insightful behind-the-scenes look at those working with this interdisciplinary and cross-media approach. In this animation the Y8 students from St Michaels School create a playful interpretation of John Stezaker's photographs currently seen at the Saatchi Gallery's Out of Focus: Photography exhibition. Using self portraits the students bring to life the process of dissection and montage by developing a rhythmic combination of characters: initially as happy partnerships that later develop sinister unsettling characteristics.

December 14 - Macro Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Roma Una Storia is a cycle of five talks that rethink the classical artist talk format by internationally renowned artists from different generations. Una Storia is a project curated by Luca Lo Pinto. Una Storia seeks to identify unusual interpretations and alternative routes to discussing widely recognized and established “classics” of the history of Italian and international art. To this effect five protagonists of the contemporary art scene have been invited and their narratives offer not only contemplations on the history of art, but more importantly interests and points of reference for the protagonists of art today. Using words, images, sound and video these fascinating and surprising narrations will be conveyed by each artist as five quick trips through history and time; five “histories of art”, balancing between an intimate and personal dimension and a more collective and familiar one.

DESCRIPTION TE2/1979/13 One-to-one interview. Begins with a cut to a man (Fuchs) in glasses holding a mug. He is seated on a chair before a stationary camera. The camera pans right to reveal a woman (Johnson) with dark hair seated in another chair beside the man. With another cut, the interview begins. Johnson begins speaking directly to the camera, and as the interview progresses into a guided conversation, the camera pans back and forth between these 2 figures. About halfway through the footage, the image appears more blurry and stretched, the count quality becomes slightly more prone to some white noise. Ends on a zoom of Fuchs' face, a pan to Johnson as she thanks him for his presence. The camera zooms out as Johnson looks directly into the camera lens, then down at her lap as the footage cuts. This interview was conducted by Isobel Johnson on the occasion of a 1979 Arts Councils touring exhibition (curators were invited to select artists and given the opportunity to purchase work for the Arts Council collection). Rudi Fuchs, at the time the director of the Van Abbé museum in Eindhoven was asked to provide a fresh insight into contemporary British art. In the exhibition, Languages, he presented work by Victor Burgin, Gerard Hemsworth, John Murphy, Gerard Newman, Bruce Robbins, John Stezaker, Stephan Willats, Art + Language.

Here is my 'Words in Motion' piece which i created on After Effects and edited together in FinalCut. Poem (Sylvia Plath - Cut) http://www.internal.org/Sylvia_Plath/Cut Artist (John Stezaker) http://www.saatchigallery.com/artists/john_stezaker.htm We had to create a piece using a poem from the poet assigned to us, and then represent that poem using the style of the artist we were given. I did some research into my artist, and most of his work, or most recognisable, were very identical. So i decided to use his main trait which involves splitting images and incorporate it into my motion piece. Because of this main feature i also decided to use the poem 'Cut' by Sylvia Plath as the title reflects the style i am trying to create.
