Wichita State University Gordon Parks Lecture Series: John W. Franklin To celebrate the centennial of Gordon Parks' birth, John W. Franklin, Director of Partnerships and International Programs for the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture, spoke about the development and mission of this new, national museum slated to open on the Washington Mall in 2015. How will the NMAAHC address the epic sweep of African Americans--their tragedies and accomplishments--in museum galleries? How will the museum incorporate historic figures, including Gordon Parks? In considering Parks' legacy at the 100th anniversary of his birth on November 30, 2012, Franklin's talk will demonstrate the significance of this Kansas native son. The event included a book party for "Gordon Parks Centennial: His Legacy at Wichita State University." To acknowledge the strength of campus holdings related to Parks--both archival at Special Collections and artistic at the Ulrich Museum--Wichita State University unveiled a special 64-page publication. Franklin spoke Thursday, October 4, 2012, in the Campus Activities Center Theater on the Wichita State University campus.
