1. Joyce Shoffner, Patient in Duke's Fraudulent Trial, Speaks

from The Cancer Letter / Added

Joyce Shoffner would never have predicted that Duke University, an institution she revered and at one time worked for, would put her in a breast cancer clinical trial testing a fraudulent technology. “They advertised publicly that this science offered an 80 percent cure rate,” Shoffner said. “To have the type of cancer I had, I was just going to do that, there’s nobody that’s going to stop me, because this was what I was told and this was what I believed was going to happen.” In July 2008, Shoffner became patient No. 1 in the trial that promised to choose the best therapy for the unique characteristics of her disease. Alas, the groundbreaking genomic predictors pioneered by Anil Potti and his mentor Joseph Nevins, which the trials were testing, would turn out to be fraudulent. Reimon and Joyce's first encounter was in Starbucks, Tagaytay on Joyce's birthday, midnight of July 19, 2013. They were introduced by Reimon's best friend who at that time was courting Joyce. At first Joyce find Reimon very annoying but witty and funny. He smokes and she hated it. So she never thought that meeting would lead her looking forward to be with him again. After that meeting at Starbucks, it took several months until they finally get together again. On May 9, 2014, Reimon asked her out for pizza at Shakey's Las Pinas. This was their first date. He was silly, adorable and so much fun to be around. They laughed over funny jokes, talked about a lot of things including work, family and their favorite stuff then later drove her home. It was a fun and memorable date! Needless to say, sparks flew! Reimon is the most responsible and kind person she know and he constantly challenges her to be the best version of herself. He always surprises her with flowers and chocolates and treats her like a princess. She has found her prince charming, loving, sweet, caring, along with all of his imperfections. They keep their relationship strong by reminding each other of their love. Joyce likes to leave little love notes for him, posting handwritten notes in his car or in his room. On May 9, 2015 Joyce walked down the aisle in her most beautiful dress, ready to have his name. They had the wedding of their dreams at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Church in Tagaytay City surrounded by the people they love most. By Team Freshminds www.freshmindsphotography.com

On November 13, 2014, Catherine Flynn (English) raised the question of urban knowing, of processes of knowledge that take place outside of familial, social and professional contexts and that depend upon the urban fabric. It looks at the means used to construct and represent such processes in literary and filmic engagements with the city and the megacity. It compares the technical means availed of by Joyce and Schröter: urban (infrastructure, systems of circulation), artistic (stream of consciousness, static camera, montage) and personal (both Joyce and Schröter’s personae engage in silent looking, empathy and mimicry) and considers the pressures put upon these means by the megacity. This talk was part of the Reading Cities, Sensing Cities colloquium presented by the Global Urban Humanities Initiative at UC Berkeley. http://globalurbanhumanities.berkeley.edu/

Gab and Joyce met while working at St. Vincent’s Hospital Southside in 2010. It was Gab who first approached her and asked if she is related to Julius. Joyce replied that he is her brother. During their little chit chat, Joyce learned that he is Geoff’s brother (Geoff, Julius and her sister in law are all good friends). So, aside from having mutual friends, the two have also developed good friendship as years went by. One of Joyce's new years resolution in 2012 was to really try to get back into being more physically active for health reasons, so she asked Gab, who enjoys working out, if they could meet up after work to discuss the best or feasible fitness regimen for her. They met up for dinner and had lots of laughs and chit chat over things like fitness, travelling, and other activities they enjoy. Both realized they had a lot more in common than they could have ever imagined. Shortly thereafter, Gab asked her out on their first official date. Neither of them wanted the date to end and they have been together since that day. Soon, they formally introduce their relationship to their families at gatherings and included each other in social occasions with their friends. Gab proposed in January 28, 2013, shortly after their return from a road trip to New Jersey. But Joyce had no idea that prior the proposal, Gab had already discussed his intentions with her parents. Two years later, on the 25th day of February, 2015, Gab and Joyce got married at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Tagaytay followed by a reception held at the incredibly well known Taal Vista Hotel. Being surrounded by the most important people in their lives made the newlyweds more happy. By Team Freshminds www.freshmindsphotography.com
